Book Description
In order to select an optimal structure among possible similar structures, one needs to compare the elastic behavior of the structures. A new criterion that describes elastic behavior is the rate of change of deformation. Using this criterion, the safe dimensions of a structure that are required by the stress distributed in a structure can be calculated. The new non-linear theory of elasticity allows one to determine the actual individual limit of elasticity/failure of a structure using a simple non-destructive method of measurement of deformation on the model of a structure while presently it can be done only with a destructive test for each structure. For building and explaining the theory, a new logical structure was introduced as the basis of the theory. One of the important physical implications of this logic is that it describes mathematically the universal domain of the possible stable physical relations.

Wavelet and Wave Analysis as Applied to Materials with Micro Or Nanostructure
Author: Carlo Cattani
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812709762
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 473
Book Description
This seminal book unites three different areas of modern science: the micromechanics and nanomechanics of composite materials; wavelet analysis as applied to physical problems; and the propagation of a new type of solitary wave in composite materials, nonlinear waves. Each of the three areas is described in a simple and understandable form, focusing on the many perspectives of the links among the three. All of the techniques and procedures are described here in the clearest and most open form, enabling the reader to quickly learn and use them when faced with the new and more advanced problems that are proposed in this book. By combining these new scientific concepts into a unitary model and enlightening readers on this pioneering field of research, readers will hopefully be inspired to explore the more advanced aspects of this promising scientific direction. The application of wavelet analysis to nanomaterials and waves in nanocomposites can be very appealing to both specialists working on theoretical developments in wavelets as well as specialists applying these methods and experiments in the mechanics of materials. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (121 KB). Contents: Wavelet Analysis; Materials with Micro- or Nanostructure; Waves in Materials; Simple and Solitary Waves in Materials; Solitary Waves and Elastic Waves. Readership: Advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as experts in mathematical modeling, engineering mechanics and mechanics, physics; specialists in wavelet and wave analysis as tools for mathematical modeling.

Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming
Author: H. E. Rauch
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483150410
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 135
Book Description
Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming contains the proceedings of the International Federation of Automatic Control Workshop on Control Applications of Nonlinear Programming, held in Denver, Colorado, on June 21, 1979. The workshop provided a forum for discussing the application of optimal and nonlinear programming techniques to real-life control problems. The volume covers a variety of specific applications ranging from microprocessor control of automotive engines and optimal design of structures to optimal aircraft trajectories, system identification, and robotics. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book begins by describing the application of nonlinear programming to an optimum design problem coming from mechanical engineering. The reader is then introduced to a nonlinear regulator design for magnetic suspension; optimal control solution of the automotive emission-constrained minimum fuel problem; and nonlinear programming for system identification. Subsequent chapters focus on mathematical programming algorithms based on Lagrangian functions for solving optimal control problems; computer-aided design via optimization; optimal and suboptimal control of oscillating dynamical systems; and the application of nonlinear programming to the solution of optimal output-constrained regulator problems. This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

Optimal Design with Advanced Materials
Author: P. Pedersen
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444600302
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 528
Book Description
Optimal design with advanced materials is becoming a very progressive and challenging domain within applied mechanics. The increasing use of advanced materials, such as anisotropic fiber composites and ceramics, is instigating new developments to be made within constitutive modelling and the computational methods of analysis, sensitivity analysis and optimization. A new dimension of optimal design is being realised by the direct tailoring and building of new materials. Research in this area is accelerating rapidly with the results already being applied to high technology industries. Two vital high technology research areas covered in this volume include homogenization and smart materials/structures. The 31 papers will prove an indispensable reference source for all those involved in the interdisciplinary research and development aspects of mechanics, materials and mathematics in the design of advanced materials.
