Author: L. K. Masao
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1578869897
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 161
Book Description
No More Theories Please! is a classroom management guide for current and prospective elementary classroom teachers. Unlike many other education texts, this book does not speak in theoretical terms. Rather it provides a "how-to" guide that clearly defines each strategy and procedure. Masao discusses the 3 Rs of management--routines, rules, and reinforcement--as well as behavior management plans and organizations. The book is divided into three parts: organization; routines, rules, and reinforcement; and classroom behavior-management systems. Each part has three or four chapters and provides tangible and pragmatic steps that can be taken to create the desired structured environment. Some chapters provide templates for management systems that the author created and implemented successfully in her own classroom. --From publisher's description.

No New Theories

Book Description
"No New Theories builds on Kameelah Janan Rasheed's accretive and associative installation work, bringing together xerox abstractions, poetic text fragments, and found as well as original photography to explore learning and unlearning as a spiritual, socio-political, ecological, and cognitive process. With No New Theories Rasheed freely assembles her own writing, autocorrect algorithms, and Oulipian poems (short texts generated with the help of imposed constraints) alongside visuals drawn from her personal image archive, pop culture, zoological journals, quranic verses, and other sources. The work gathers these threads with an emphasis on the processes of revision and improvisation as she considers the entropic potential of meaning in place of fixed definitions. At the heart of No New Theories is an expansive interview between Rasheed and Jessica Lynne, co-founder of the art criticism journal ARTS.BLACK. The conversation attempts to document their intellectual partnership, constructed through a layering process by which the original exchange is reworked and expanded with annotations, citations, and excerpted texts from writers Samuel R. Delany, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Emily Dickinson, and others. Rasheed and Lynne take on questions of epistemology and pedagogy, the nature of research, knowledge-acquisition, as well as patience and fatigue. Building on the notion of the 'organic archive' -- both as a fictional organizing framework and as a score for possible experiences -- the two consider various historical, sociological, and cultural facets of Americana, proposing a multi-directional discourse around the wide permutations of Black experience. The book's title -- No New Theories -- locates Blackness as a multivalent and porous experience that cannot and should not be neatly theorized"--

How Are You Now?
Author: Christopher A. Taylor
Publisher: FriesenPress
ISBN: 1039195067
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 167
Book Description
“There are many ways of peering into life and then responding; and by responding, peering further.” The poems in How Are You Now? peer into life. They “don’t try to nail things down.” They “pry them loose instead.” They question our very foundation, exposing the innate wobbliness of reason, religion, selfhood, purpose. They open up a world of possibilities, explore aging, memory, grief, the reliability of change, the physics of wind, the push and pull of want and need. Christopher A. Taylor finds meaning in the smallest observations: a pink toque, the sound of leaves falling from the trees, a stump in twilight, a woman running for a streetcar, a black lamp, butterflies, and crows. This poetry collection, organized into six sections—“New World”, “A Hollow in the Mind”, “The Nub of It”, “The Secret of Music”, “Into the River”, and “How Are You Now?”—will be of interest to anyone who likes contemporary poetry; and some who don’t.

Magick in Theory and Practice
Author: The Master Therion
Publisher: Library of Alexandria
ISBN: 1465580123
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 518
Book Description
EXISTENCE, as we know it, is full of sorrow. To mention only one minor point: every man is a condemned criminal, only he does not know the date of his execution. This is unpleasant for every man. Consequently every man does everything possible to postpone the date, and would sacrifice anything that he has if he could reverse the sentence. Practically all religions and all philosophies have started thus crudely, by promising their adherents some such reward as immortality. No religion has failed hitherto by not promising enough; the present breaking up of all religions is due to the fact that people have asked to see the securities. Men have even renounced the important material advantages which a well-organized religion may confer upon a State, rather than acquiesce in fraud or falsehood, or even in any system which, if not proved guilty, is at least unable to demonstrate its innocence. Being more or less bankrupt, the best thing that we can do is to attack the problem afresh without preconceived ideas. Let us begin by doubting every statement. Let us find a way of subjecting every statement to the test of experiment. Is there any truth at all in the claims of various religions? Let us examine the question. Our original difficulty will be due to the enormous wealth of our material. To enter into a critical examination of all systems would be an unending task; the cloud of witnesses is too great. Now each religion is equally positive; and each demands faith. This we refuse in the absence of positive proof. But we may usefully inquire whether there is not any one thing upon which all religions have agreed: for, if so, it seems possible that it may be worthy of really thorough consideration. It is certainly not to be found in dogma. Even so simple an idea as that of a supreme and eternal being is denied by a third of the human race. Legends of miracle are perhaps universal, but these, in the absence of demonstrative proof, are repugnant to common sense. But what of the origin of religions? How is it that unproved assertion has so frequently compelled the assent of all classes of mankind? Is not this a miracle? There is, however, one form of miracle which certainly happens, the influence of the genius. There is no known analogy in Nature. One cannot even think of a "super-dog" transforming the world of dogs, whereas in the history of mankind this happens with regularity and frequency. Now here are three "super-men," all at loggerheads. What is there in common between Christ, Buddha, and Mohammed?

Theorizing Teaching
Author: Anna-Katharina Praetorius
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031256131
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 365
Book Description
This open access book seeks to create a forum for discussing key questions regarding theories on teaching: Which theories of teaching do we have? What are their attributes? What do they contain? How are they generated? How context-sensitive and content-specific do they need to be? Is it possible or even desirable to develop a comprehensive theory of teaching? The book identifies areas of convergence and divergence among the answers to these questions by prominent international scholars in research on teaching. Initiating exchanges among the authors, it then evaluates whether consensus can be reached on the areas of divergence. The book concludes by discussing lessons learned from this endeavor and outlines steps that need to be taken for advancing future work on theorizing teaching. As such, the book is aimed at readers interested in an overview of the theorizing of teaching and key open questions that, if addressed, help to move the field forward.

The Ascent of Science
Author: Brian L. Silver
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198027699
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 553
Book Description
From the revolutionary discoveries of Galileo and Newton to the mind-bending theories of Einstein and Heisenberg, from plate tectonics to particle physics, from the origin of life to universal entropy, and from biology to cosmology, here is a sweeping, readable, and dynamic account of the whole of Western science. In the approachable manner and method of Stephen Jay Gould and Carl Sagan, the late Brian L. Silver translates our most important, and often most obscure, scientific developments into a vernacular that is not only accessible and illuminating but also enjoyable. Silver makes his comprehensive case with much clarity and insight; his book aptly locates science as the apex of human reason, and reason as our best path to the truth. For all readers curious about--or else perhaps intimidated by--what Silver calls "the scientific campaign up to now" in his Preface, The Ascent of Science will be fresh, vivid, and fascinating reading.
