Book Description
Denny Abbott first encountered the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children at Mt. Meigs as a twenty-one-year-old probation officer for the Montgomery County Family Court. He would became so concerned about conditions for black juvenile offenders there -- including hard labor, beatings, and rape -- that he took the State of Alabama to court to win reforms. With the help of the U.S. Justice Department, Abbott won a resounding victory that brought change, although three years later he had to sue the state again. In They Had No Voice, Abbott details these battles and how his actions cost him his job and made him a pariah in his hometown, but resulted in better lives for Alabama’s children. Abbott also tells of his later career as the first national director of the Adam Walsh Child Resource Center, where he helped focus attention on missing and exploited children and became widely recognized as an expert on children’s issues.

Book Description
Children of alcoholic or addicted parents may be stripped of hope, courage, and self-esteem. The dysfunctional family is fueled by shame and chaos, stunting children’s relationships and self-acceptance. Adult children of alcoholics and addicts need encouragement to overcome these childhood deprivations. Days of Healing, Days of Joy models a program of serenity, spirituality, and acceptance through its meditations. “Children of alcoholics are set up for their struggles. You are not sick. You got set up.” —Dr. Jan Woititz Alcoholic or addicted parents may become focused on their compulsion while their children fend for themselves in a dysfunctional household. Without helpful and informative parental guidance, children manage their own personal growth, and their spiritual and emotional health suffers. Children parent themselves, and their innocence dies. Parents with addiction may not have demonstrated healthy connection and love to their children. Adult children of addicts or alcoholics are often shadowed by this disconnect; codependency, self-judgment, and overzealous loyalty darken their doorway. Fortunately, healing and recovery are within reach. In Days of Healing, Days of Joy, Earnie Larsen and Carol Larsen Hegarty share the reflective and peaceful insight needed for growing up again—this time with plenty of love and patience.

Exploring contemporary theory and practice surrounding loss and bereavement for people with intellectual disabilities (ID), this book brings together international contributors with a range of academic, professional and personal experience. This authoritative edited book looks at diverse experiences of loss across this population whether it be loss due to transition, the loss or death of others, or facing their own impending death. The book begins by offering theoretical perspectives on loss and compassion, bereavement, disenfranchised grief, spirituality, and psychological support. It then addresses contemporary practice issues in health and social care contexts and explores loss for specific communities with ID including children, individuals with autism, those in forensic environments, and those at the end of life. Identifying inherent challenges that arise when supporting individuals with ID experiencing loss, and providing evidence and case studies to support best practice approaches, this book will be valuable reading for students, academics and professionals in the fields of disability, health and social care.

Book Description
Stories typically adhere to a format that allows for a manipulation of characters and situations. A story usually revolves about a central theme which allows the plot to develop. I have found that often, when you attempt to create a work of fiction, you find yourself hindered by questions of form. Do you use a first person or third person omniscient voice? Will you foreshadow what will come in the later chapters early in the book, or just before what you believe will be the climax? I recently began work on a novel and from the extensive amount of research and time I placed into understanding the era in which the novel is set, I found myself overcome by emotions that ranged from anger and frustration, to pride and happiness. I discovered a lot about what writing means to me. In an attempt to break myself out of a rather long writer's block, I began to write about anything that I thought of, an attempt at fighting my way out of a corner. Hence the choppiness of this work. I revised the poems and the flash fictions but, I felt that it was important to maintain the concept of addressing what I was trying to understand and comprehend in each section. - from the Epilogue

Book Description
Even though legal aid is available for people seeking asylum, there is uneven access to advice across Britain. Based on empirical research, this book offers fresh thinking on what has gone wrong in the legal aid market. It presents a rare picture of the barristers, solicitors and caseworkers practising immigration law in charities and private firms. In doing so, this book examines supply and demand and illuminates what constitutes high-quality legal aid work/provision, subsequent conflicts with financial rationality and how practitioners resolve these issues. Challenging existing legal aid policy, this book presents innovative insights to ensure public service markets around the globe function well for all those involved.
