Book Description
Graphic novelist Willow Tate is a Visualizer, able to draw images of beings from the realm of Faerie—possibly “drawing” them from their world to ours in the process. First came a ten-foot-tall red troll who followed her from Manhattan to the small town of Paumanok Harbor in the Hamptons. Willow realized then that many of her relatives and their neighbors possessed a whole range of psychic talents—truth-knowing, scrying, weaving wishes, picking lucky numbers, etc. And all of them seemed privy to everything that happened in her life. So when magic and mayhem return to Paumanok Harbor, of course Willy is called upon to rescue the little town. Three magical mares are searching the Long Island village for a missing colt, and their distress is causing sleepless nights, bad tempers, and dangerous brawls among the gifted but peculiar residents. The Department of Unexplained Events sends Willow some help, a world-famous, horse-whisperer. Texan Ty Farraday seems more interested in whispering in her ear, though, than in rescuing the kidnapped colt whose terror only Willy can feel. Enlisting Paumanok Harbor’s uniquely talented residents in the search, Willy still has to struggle with snakes, drug dealers, tourists, hidden caves, a mad scientist—and the almost overwhelming distraction of that sexy cowboy. “Willow is a fabulous lead protagonist… The story line is fast-paced…the audience will stay up late reading this thriller… Celia Jerome has written a charming Long Island satirical urban fantasy.” —SFRevue

Millenarian Dreams and Racial Nightmares
Author: John H. Matsui
Publisher: LSU Press
ISBN: 0807175315
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 306
Book Description
In Millenarian Dreams and Racial Nightmares, John H. Matsui argues that the political ideology and racial views of American Protestants during the Civil War mirrored their religious optimism or pessimism regarding human nature, perfectibility, and the millennium. While previous historians have commented on the role of antebellum eschatology in political alignment, none have delved deeply into how religious views complicate the standard narrative of the North versus the South. Moving beyond the traditional optimism/pessimism dichotomy, Matsui divides American Protestants of the Civil War era into “premillenarian” and “postmillenarian” camps. Both postmillenarian and premillenarian Christians held that the return of Christ would inaugurate the arrival of heaven on earth, but they disagreed over its timing. This disagreement was key to their disparate political stances. Postmillenarians argued that God expected good Christians to actively perfect the world via moral reform—of self and society—and free-labor ideology, whereas premillenarians defended hierarchy or racial mastery (or both). Northern Democrats were generally comfortable with antebellum racial norms and were cynical regarding human nature; they therefore opposed Republicans’ utopian plans to reform the South. Southern Democrats, who held premillenarian views like their northern counterparts, pressed for or at least acquiesced in the secession of slaveholding states to preserve white supremacy. Most crucially, enslaved African American Protestants sought freedom, a postmillenarian societal change requiring nothing less than a major revolution and the reconstruction of southern society. Millenarian Dreams and Racial Nightmares adds a new dimension to our understanding of the Civil War as it reveals the wartime marriage of political and racial ideology to religious speculation. As Matsui argues, the postmillenarian ideology came to dominate the northern states during the war years and the nation as a whole following the Union victory in 1865.

The Boston police, with cooperation from other Massachusetts and New Hampshire police departments, suddenly find themselves deep into an investigation as to who and why this former State Senator, who only recently left his job as head of the Washington D.C. Three anti-environmental groups and their outspoken leaders are investigated and they, and some of their hired involved followers do not rule out arson or murder or the bombing of a police patrol car, to stand in the way of their anti-environmental goals and their economic windfalls. Smothers and stunningly attractive Boston Police Lieutenant Sandra Graham somehow find their off duty attraction to each other becomes much more than, off with his tie, and off with her high heels, as the moonlight floods Sandra's harbor side apartment. The sergeant finds the lieutenant striking beautiful and irresistible, both in and out of uniform.
