Book Description
Nicotine Addiction and The Cure - An Integrated Approach to Smoking Cessation is a guide on how to quit smoking that contains not only helpful hints but also real testimonials from people who have followed this path to the letter. After a detailed introduction on the origin of tobacco, the use of smoking and the growth of the tobacco and cigarette industry worldwide, with the consequent harmful effects on smokers and society, we move on to the spread of nicotine addiction and the treatment of smoking addiction. All data and experiences presented within the book are drawn from the author’s experience of running a smoking cessation clinic and his own study of over 35 years. In the smoking cessation clinic not only conventional medical treatments were provided, but also hypnosis and acupuncture for smokers who wanted to quit smoking. The book also discusses the conventional approach to smoking cessation with medication, behavioural therapy, counselling and e-cigarettes along with an alternative approach to smoking cessation incorporating hypnosis and acupuncture. The clinic’s project “An Integrated Approach to Smoking Cessation” was judged as one of the ten best projects in the UK by the Foundation for Integrated Medicine in 2001 and received a certificate of achievement from His Royal Highness Prince Charles. Dr Mazhari came to the UK in the early seventies. He did rotational jobs in various disciplines as a Senior House Officer at Whipton and Heavitree Hospital in Exeter, North Ormesby Hospital, Middlesborough, New Cross Hospital, Ryde County Hospital and Whitecroft Hospital in the Isle of Wight. In between the jobs, he obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the School of Tropical Medicine Liverpool, Diploma in Paediatrics from the University of Dublin, Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis from the University of Sheffield and achieved Licence and a Certificate of Competence to practice Acupuncture from the North Western Academy of Acupuncture Liverpool. After completing his training, he moved to Durham to work as a General Practitioner in practice in a mining village in Chopwell. In June 1982, he moved to Manchester to take over a single-handed practice in Clayton where he worked until his retirement in June 2017. It was here where he developed a special interest in smoking cessation and developed a smoking cessation clinic that uses therapies such as hypnosis and acupuncture. Besides being a GP, he is an accomplished poet, two of his books have been published in Delhi, India. He is a prolific writer, many of his articles have been published in various medical journals like Pulse, General Practitioner, Doctor, Med Economic and British Journal of International Doctors (BIDA). Even in his retirement he keeps active in writing and reading, hence this book to share his experiences of smoking cessation.

Book Description
Despite persistent warnings from the medical profession about the health risks involved in cigarette smoking, millions of people continue to smoke cigarettes. With contributions from renowned experts, this ground-breaking work defines and explains nicotine addiction as a primary problem or disease, instead of as a habit or risk factor for other diseases. A comprehensive, clinical text on tobacco dependence, this book provides clinicians with essential information on how to diagnose and treat nicotine addicted patients. It also offers the medical, epidemiological and behavioral science backgrounds necessary for understanding the process and dynamics of tobacco dependence. Following the traditional format of medical texts, the book first covers etiology, pathogenesis and complications, then diagnosis and treatment, and finally public health and prevention. Part One presents an overview of the biological, psychological and social factors that contribute to nicotine dependence including such topics as a description of nicotine delivery systems, psychopharmacology, economics, natural history and epidemiology, mortality, morbidity, and environmental tobacco smoke exposure. The second part offers practical guidelines and tools for treating nicotine dependence and describes a stepped-care treatment model with brief interventions that can be easily integrated into routine medical practice. This section also covers the role of psychopharmacologic and formal treatment programs, the treatment of smokeless tobacco addiction, and treating nicotine dependence in pregnant women and in people with medical illnesses, other chemical dependencies, or psychiatric disorders. The last section focuses on worksite and community intervention programs and summarizes the research on smoking patterns and history in women, Blacks, Hispanics, youth, and older adults, and shows how intervention and prevention programs could be made more effective in these groups. Written by the nation's leading tobacco control researchers and clinicians, this important work contains new and critical information not previously available.

Book Description
How many times have you thought about quitting smoking? How many times have you tried to kick the habit only to give into your cravings and light up again? I've been there. While there are many books focusing on helping people quit smoking, few have them were created by people who really know what it's like to be heavily addicted to the smoker’s lifestyle.. and it really is a lifestyle, isn't it? We smoke to be social, we smoke after a good meal with friends, we smoke to relax, and we even smoke just for the joy of it all.. whether it's a choice or not doesn't matter, we don't all hate smoking, we all just know how incredibly risky it is to keep on doing it. So, we stick on the patch and try our hardest to resist the temptation of lighting up.. when that doesn't work, we try chewing on nicotine gum, only to burn our throats and gag at the flavor that hardly replaces a cigarette.. and after those things fail us miserably, we become guinea pigs to hypnosis or magnetic jewelry, all claiming to be instant solutions to butting out that last cigarette, permanently. Yet, how many of those things really work? Our cravings are stronger than most of the aids, and despite how seriously committed you are to quitting, without a solid system in place, you are likely going to continue to shell out money trying every new gimmick to hit the market, only to continue right back where you started. But it doesn't have to be that way... For the first time ever, I have written everything I know about smoking, the reasons we do it, the methods we can use to quit and how we can rid ourselves from the powerful control that smoking has over us, without ever having to suffer from withdrawal or worry about relapse.. Book Description
The 1980s have. seen a remarkable degree of public and professional acceptance of cigarette smoking as the most widespread and devastating form of drug dependence. More medical schools now give required courses about drug dependence. Prestigious journals publish reports of investiga tions on the subject of nicotine dependence, and more conferences and workshops are held each year on various aspects of nicotine dependence. All this is in sharp contrast to the earlier prevailing atmosphere of dis interest, ignorance, or professional disdain. These changes created an obvious place for a textbook oriented pri marily toward the needs of clinicians working with patients who have nicotine dependence. Thus, in preparation of this book, most aspects of the management of nicotine dependence are incorporated, in order to address concerns of physicians in training and other health care profes sionals across the world. The final product, which I believe to be com prehensive and clinically relevant throughout, is a text that I hope will be of equal use to psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors, and physicians in all specialties. An encyclopedic treatise was deliberately avoided because that approach can be cumbersome in size, readability, and cost, and for that reason, readers will find little mention of data involv ing animal research, nicotine-related politics, nicotine product advertising, medical consequences of smoking, psychotherapeutic techniques, and the extent of the problem.

Book Description
Historians and scientists a few millennia from now are likely to see tobacco as one of the major bafflements of our time, suggests Janet Brigham. Why do we smoke so much, even when we know that tobacco kills more than a million of us a year? Two decades ago, smoking was on the decline in the United States. Now the decline has flattened, and smoking appears to be increasing, most ominously among young people. Cigar smoking is on the rise. Data from a generation of young smokers indicate that many of them want to quit but have no access to effective treatment. Dying to Quit features the real-life smoking day of a young woman who plans to quitâ€"again. Her comments take readers inside her love/hate relationship with tobacco. In everyday language, the book reveals the complex psychological and scientific issues behind the news headlines about tobacco regulations, lawsuits and settlements, and breaking scientific news. What is addiction? Is there such a thing as an addictive personality? What does nicotine do to the body? How does it affect the brain? Why do people stand in subzero temperatures outside office buildings to smoke cigarettes? What is the impact of carefully crafted advertisements and marketing strategies? Why do people who are depressed tend to smoke more? What is the biology behind these common links? These and many fundamental questions are explored drawing on the latest findings from the world's best addictions laboratories. Want to quit? Brigham takes us shopping in the marketplace of gizmos and gadgets designed to help people stop smoking, from wristwatch-like monitors to the lettuce cigarette. She presents the bad news and the not-so-bad news about smoking cessation, including the truth about withdrawal symptoms and weight gain. And she summarizes authoritative findings and recommendations about what actually works in quitting smoking. By training a behavioral scientistâ€"by gift a writing talentâ€"Brigham helps readers understand what people feel when they use tobacco or when they quit. At a time when tobacco smoke has filled nearly every corner of the earth and public confusion grows amid strident claims and counterclaims in the media, Dying to Quit clears the air with dispassion toward facts and compassion toward smokers. This book invites readers on a fascinating journey through the world of tobacco use and points the way toward help for smokers who want to quit. Janet Brigham, Ph.D., is a research psychologist with SRI International in Menlo Park, California, where she studies tobacco use. A former journalist and editor, she has conducted substance use research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the University of Pittsburgh
