Book Description
Ten-year-old Sadie Meadows is reading in bed on New Year's Eve when she notices an unopened present beneath her window. She finds it contains a book called The World from Your Bedroom - There and Back Again, but when she opens it up and begins to read, she is disappointed to see it is nothing more than a travel book packed with pages detailing hundreds of places across the world. She reads the first page, then puts the book down just as sleep claims her at the instant that the New Year arrives. She awakes to find that, instead of being in her bedroom at home in Skipton, somehow she has been transported to Ireland, the location that she had just read about in the book. There follow a series of adventures, each set in a different location, as Sadie finds herself travelling across the globe as she attempts to get back home again. This month sees her continuing her journeys across the continent of Africa.

Book Description
This book offers an in-depth treatment of a variety of morpho-syntactic issues in Cape Verdean Creole (CVC) both from a descriptive and theoretical perspective. The investigated topics include the determiner system, Tense, Mood, Aspect markers and pronominal paradigms. The study of TMA markers reveals morpho-syntactic configurations with interesting ramifications for syntactic theory and parametric variation. This book targets creolists, theoretical linguists, and the Cape Verdean community. Given the diversified targeted audience, the descriptive chapters are purposefully kept separate from their theoretical counterparts, presenting issues that are later revisited in the Minimalist framework. The data used in this study are primarily drawn from 83 transcribed interviews from a pool of 187 speakers. The interviews were collected during fieldwork conducted in 1997, 2000 and 2001 in the Cape Verdean Sotavento (leeward) islands representing the more basilectal varieties of the creole. As all natural languages, CVC displays syntactic similarities and differences with other creoles and noncreoles. Hence, in the spirit of comparative syntax, this volume compares CVC to other creoles like Guinea-Bissau Creole and to noncreoles like Portuguese, French, Icelandic and Italian dialects.

Book Description
Arriving in New England first as crew members of whaling vessels, Afro-Portuguese immigrants from Cape Verde later came as permanent settlers and took work in the cranberry industry, on the docks, and as domestic workers. Marilyn Halter combines oral history with analyses of ships' records to chart the history and adaptation patterns of the Cape Verdean Americans. Though identifying themselves in ethnic terms, Cape Verdeans found that their African-European ancestry led their new society to view them as a racial group. Halter emphasizes racial and ethnic identity formation to show how Cape Verdeans set themselves apart from the African Americans while attempting to shrug off white society's exclusionary tactics. She also contrasts rural life on the bogs of Cape Cod with New Bedford’s urban community to reveal the ways immigrants established their own social and religious groups as they strove to maintain their Crioulo customs.

Book Description
Cutting edge scientific research has shown that exposure to the right kind of environment during the first years of life actually affects the physical structure of a child's brain, vastly increasing the number of neuron branches—the "magic trees of the mind"—that help us to learn, think, and remember. At each stage of development, the brain's ability to gain new skills and process information is refined. As a leading researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, Marion Diamond has been a pioneer in this field of research. Now, Diamond and award-winning science writer Janet Hopson present a comprehensive enrichment program designed to help parents prepare their children for a lifetime of learning.

Book Description
In the last thirty years, there has been a shift in the Cabo Verdean community in the ways it perceives itself ethnically and racially, in the creation of opportunities for socio-economic mobility, and in the pursuit of new migratory patterns within the United States to take advantage of these opportunities. Existing scholarship on the historical and contemporary experiences of Cabo Verdeans in the US has been hyper-focused on racial and ethnic identities, neglecting the space for Cabo Verdeans to share their stories, which makes this collection unique. Cabo Verdeans in the United States: Twenty-First Century Critical Perspectives edited by Terza A. Silva Lima-Neves centers Cabo Verdean stories as told by Cabo Verdeans to explore community building and challenges in the twenty-first century. The contributors examine questions of solidarity, loss of innocence, and what it means to live authentically and exist intentionally in safe spaces. They offer critical reflections on traditional cultural gender norms, and they discuss the intersections of cultural stigmas, mental and physical health, and access to care. Using interviews and personal experiences, the contributors challenge existing Cabo Verdean scholars to see the value in documenting their experiences and contributions in the United States.

Book Description
The latter part of the twentieth century has seen a renaissance of the enduring spoken art of storytelling. Stories told by real people, in person, counterbalance the impersonal, computer communication so much a part of present society. This work profiles 120 English-speaking performers worldwide and describes how they make their words come alive, what their styles of presentation are. Each entry provides pertinent information on the storyteller (address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and Web site information), categorizes their work (e.g., original tales, imaginative stories, historical), notes the audience level, and lists the instruments or props used. Style comments, such as witty, dramatic, gesturing, musical, and so on are also given. Detailed biographies reveal how the storyteller got started and their career achievements and other pertinent details. The entries conclude with an audiography, videography, bibliography, listing of awards, and sources for further information for each teller.
