Book Description
Before 1984 New Zealand was insulated by high levels of protectionism and with a degree of State intervention and regulation unparalleled elsewhere in the western world. Since then New Zealand has experienced one of the most far reaching economic reform programmes of any developed economy. The book describes and analyses the radical economic reform programme undertaken in New Zealand since 1985. These reforms included deregulation of the financial sector, removal of various forms of assistance to producers, particularly in the agricultural sector, increased import liberalisation, radical tax reform, a major overhaul of the public sector and the privatisation of state enterprises. The book seeks to explain why a Labour Government embarked upon the sort of reform programme normally considered the preserve of right-wing administrations elsewhere. It argues that New Zealand's experience provides important lessons for policy-makers elsewhere.

Book Description
In Sorrows of a Century, John Weaver describes how personal relationships, work, poverty, war, illness, and legal troubles have driven thousands to despair. His study is set in twentieth-century New Zealand where - in spite of high standards of living and a commitment to social welfare - citizens have experienced the profound losses and stresses of the human condition. Focusing on New Zealand because it has the most comprehensive and accessible coroners' records, Weaver analyzes a staggering amount of information to determine the social and cultural factors that contribute to suicide rates. He examines the country's investigations into sudden deaths, places them within the context of major events and societal changes, and turns to witnesses' statements, suicide notes, and medical records to remark on prevention strategies. His extensive survey of twelve thousand cases also provides an insightful assessment of psychiatry and psychology in the last century. In reviewing the motives and methods of suicide, Weaver points out the complications facing deterrence. Moving beyond the timeless present of the social sciences and the irrationality emphasized in psychology, Sorrows of a Century marshals testimony to highlight the historical context and rational conduct behind suicide.

Book Description
The book examines the expansion of investment and trade between China and New Zealand, and its changing composition within the political framework, especially the 2008 Free Trade Agreement. Particular attention is paid to China’s volatile agrifood market, where New Zealand dairy products play an important role for both countries. The New Zealand-China economic relationship – asymmetrical and complementary, but with increasing competition from domestic production – is a case study of the complexities of globalization and the interplay of economic imperatives, political pressures and cultural factors. China is now New Zealand’s main economic partner and a major source of migrants, tourists and students. This proposed study on how New Zealand and China manage their grave dissimilarities and disparities in growing, ever close economic ties will be of interest to academics, policy analysts, economic/trade decision makers, and business practitioners.
