Book Description
Excerpt from Early History, Daughters of the American Revolution The history of the founding of the Society, and of the first two years succeeding, is preserved in the Smithsonian Report 1890 - 1897, published by the United States Congress. Other accounts have been printed that differed from the official statements sufficiently to cause uncertainty among the chapters. From different States at varying intervals come earnest requests for a condensed official history of those early months in such form that every chapter can have access to it. Book Description
Excerpt from Brief History, Daughters of the American Revolution I have gathered facts and figures from the Smithsonian records, the American Monthly Magazine and from the Early History, a booklet issued by order of the N ationa] Board Of Management, November 8, 1908. Aside from the splendid achievements Of the National Society in a material way, there is one feature of its com prehensive work that appeals to me with especial tender ness. The dividing line, which was so pronounced between the women of the North, and of the South, following the Civil war, has vanished before a fuller knowledge and a more generous appreciation Of the worth and intellectual ability, each for the other. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution: December, 1891-December, 1905 The debts which we owe to the past, we must needs pay to the future. We live in the past by a knowledge of its history, and in the future by hope and anticipation. In view of these facts we will all agree as to the necessity of recording and preserving the anniversaries of our memo rable events, and setting up the milestones of our history. Senator Dolliver, in his address at the last Continental Congress, said that the D. A. R. In gathering up the frag ments of honor, and glory, and valor, and sacrifice, and pre serving with sacred vigilance the least name among those who were interested in laying the foundations of our national life, had caught the most beautiful idea that had ever entered into the history of this world. Mindful of the injunction to save the memorials of the past, that future generations might not forget, and that the history of the Massachusetts D. A. R. Might be put into tangi ble form for ready reference, early in 1905, a card was sent a; to each chapter in the state, asking for a brief history of the chapter, a condensed account of work done, and pictures of its patron saint or of any tablets or memorials placed. Most of the chapters responded to this appeal, and the result is most gratifying. All the reports have a thrill of life and show splendid progress, and we feel that each chapter in our state is a link in the chain which binds all the chapters of our country into one great harmonious whole.
