Book Description
Over the past four decades - and most especially in recent years as issues of identity continue to play out across the public stage - identity theory has developed into one of the most fascinating and active research programs within the spheres of sociological social psychology. Having emerged out of a landmark 2014 national conference that sought to integrate various research programs and to honor the groundbreaking work of Dr. Peter J. Burke, New Directions in Identity Theory and Research brings together the pioneers, scholars, and researchers of identity theory as they present the important theoretical, methodological, and substantive work in identity theory today. Edited by Dr. Jan E. Stets and Dr. Richard T. Serpe, this volume asserts that researchers and scholars can no longer rely on using samples, measures, concepts, and mechanisms that limit the overall advancement of identity theory and research. Instead, as Stets and Serpe contend in their introductory chapter, "Researchers constantly must try out new ideas, test the ideas with more refined measures, use samples that are representative yet racially and ethnically diverse, and employ methods (perhaps mixed methods) that capture the different dimensions of the identity process." This book is the truest testament to this idea. In New Directions in Identity Theory and Research, Stets, Serpe, and contributing authors urge readers to think outside the box by providing the road map necessary to guide future work and thought in this emerging field.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications NEW DIRECTIONS IN TIME SERIES ANALYSIS, PART II is based on the proceedings of the IMA summer program "New Directions in Time Series Analysis. " We are grateful to David Brillinger, Peter Caines, John Geweke, Emanuel Parzen, Murray Rosenblatt, and Murad Taqqu for organizing the program and we hope that the remarkable excitement and enthusiasm of the participants in this interdisciplinary effort are communicated to the reader. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE Time Series Analysis is truly an interdisciplinary field because development of its theory and methods requires interaction between the diverse disciplines in which it is applied. To harness its great potential, strong interaction must be encouraged among the diverse community of statisticians and other scientists whose research involves the analysis of time series data. This was the goal of the IMA Workshop on "New Directions in Time Series Analysis. " The workshop was held July 2-July 27, 1990 and was organized by a committee consisting of Emanuel Parzen (chair), David Brillinger, Murray Rosenblatt, Murad S. Taqqu, John Geweke, and Peter Caines. Constant guidance and encouragement was provided by Avner Friedman, Director of the IMA, and his very helpful and efficient staff. The workshops were organized by weeks. It may be of interest to record the themes that were announced in the IMA newsletter describing the workshop: l.

Book Description
The format of this monograph is three essays, which we arrived at after spending a year writing over one hundred pages of what we even tually realized was a tedious reworking of old material. So we started over determined to write something new. At first we thought this approach might not work as a coherent mono graph, which is why we chose the essay format rather than chapters. As it turns out, there is a common thread—namely the directional distance function, which also gave us our title. As you shall see, the directional distance function includes traditional distance functions and efficiency measures as special cases providing a unifying framework for existing productivity and efficiency measures. It is also flexible enough to open up new areas in productivity and efficiency analysis such as environmen tal and aggregation issues. That we did not see this earlier is humbling; a student at a recent conference raised his hand and asked 'Why didn't you start with the directional distance function in the first place? In deed. This manuscript is intended to make up for our earlier oversights. This monograph contains papers coauthored with Wen-Fu Lee and Osman Zaim and one paper written by two former students, Hiroyuki Fukuyama and Bill Weber. We thank them for their contributions. An other former student, Jim Logan (Logi) read and critiqued the manu script for which we are grateful.
