En mayo de 2002, la institución cultural norteamericana Dana Foundation, presidida por el periodista político William Safire, organizó una conferencia internacional en la que participaron más de 150 expertos de diversos países de diversos campos: filósofos, médicos, juristas, psiquiatras, neuropsicólogos, etc. La conferencia inaugural de William Safire, Neuroethics. Mapping The Field, describió el marco de discusión de los temas éticos derivados de las ciencias del cerebro. El presupuesto era que el cerebro es el órgano fundamental del individuo humano y que, por ello, las intervenciones sobre él conllevan grandes consecuencias. Poco más de diez años después, los días 12 al 14 de abril de 2013, se celebró en Madrid el XXVII Seminario Interdisciplinar de Bioética, organizado por la Cátedra de Bioética de la Universidad P. Comillas, en el que se reunieron 70 especialistas en bioética para reflexionar sobre el tema Neurociencia, neuroética y bioética. El libro que tienen en sus manos recoge las conferencias de dicho Seminario a cargo de Adela Cortina, Mónica Triviño, Emilio García, Francesc Torralba, Manuel Richard, Juan Pedro Nuñéz y Jesús Conill, especialistas todos ellos de primera línea en estos temas. Elaborar las características de la moral: esta es la primera tarea de la ética filosófica. Su segunda tarea es fundamentar la moral. Esta tarea da lugar a diversas teorías éticas, tanto filosóficas como críticas. Las teorías éticas, cada una a su manera, explican por qué hay obligaciones morales, justifican por qué son necesarios los valores morales y evalúan cuáles de estos valores son los más fundamentales.
