Residents in the sleepy little village of Neubrücke, Germany and the military personnel stationed there with the recently deployed 98th General Hospital are blissfully unaware of the spy games going on around them. In this remote outpost in the French Zone of occupation in the southwest corner of Germany, the beer is good, the duty is mostly boring, and the only problem the GI's stationed there have is trying to decide which gasthaus they want to go to tonight. However, when the 7424th Support Squadron starts remodeling and restructuring the Air Force communication facilities at the nearby Birkenfeld Tactical Air Base their world is about to be changed forever. Almost as soon as construction is started, rumors start spreading that what is advertised as just an upgrade to the existing facilities is in reality the installation of a top secret communications facility. As a result, Russian KGB and East German Stasi agents are sent to investigate. When Washington responds by sending agents of their own, Neubrücke, and the American GI's that are stationed here are about to enter the Cold War.

This Symposium on Catalyst Deactivation ensues those held at Berkeley (1985), Antwerp (1980) and Berkeley (1978).The three main topics emphasised at this most recent symposium were: the techniques used in deactivation studies, the mechanisms of catalyst deactivation, and modelling. With respect to the first, it became apparent that the study of deactivation faces even more difficulties than the characterization of fresh catalysts and the measurement of activity or selectivity, due to the multiplicity of interacting processes occurring during deactivation. Quite substantial progress has been made recently in the understanding of the mechanisms of various deactivation processes, particularly coking, and extra time was accorded to these topics at the symposium. The third topic corresponds to a problem which is very central to development studies and to the chemical engineering aspect of catalysis: it deals with the representativity of accelerated tests and the modelling of the deactivation phenomena.

Intensive research on zeolites, during the past thirty years, has resulted in a deep understanding of their chemistry and in a true zeolite science, including synthesis, structure, chemical and physical properties, and catalysis. These studies are the basis for the development and growth of several industrial processes applying zeolites for selective sorption, separation, and catalysis. In 1983, a NATO Advanced Study Institute was organized in Alcabideche (portugal) to establish the State-of-the-Art in Zeolite Science and Technology and to contribute to a better understanding of the structural properties of zeolites, the configurational constraints they may exert, and their effects in adsorption, diffusion, and catalysis. Since then, zeolite science has witnessed an almost exponential growth in published papers and patents, dealing with both fundamentals issues and original applications. The proposal of new procedures for zeolite synthesis, the development of novel and sophisticated physical techniques for zeolite characterization, the discovery of new zeolitic and related microporous materials, progresses in quantum chemistry and molecular modeling of zeolites, and the application of zeolites as catalysts for organic reactions have prompted increasing interest among the scientific community.
