Not illustrated. 1872 edition. Excerpt: ...Very great quickness in the bringing of objects within the field of view can be soon acquired. The eye becomes educated to a remarkable keenness of vision by continued praotice. When observations are made with the telescope, or when messages ar.e being received by it by signals, nothing must be taken for granted, and nothing considered as Been, until it has been positively in view, and so clearly as not to admit of doubt. The watchman on duty must be seated at the glass; and before assuming his station must, with the aid of the soldier last on duty, make certain that he knows the exact position of the observed station, and that it is plainly in the field of the glass. This precaution is particularly necessary at night, when the least movement of the glass may have thrown the station out of view. All...
