The Burr Pond Dam consists of a stone masonry wall with an upstream earth embankment. The dam has a maximum height of 17 feet and an overall length of 170 feet, including a 44.7-foot-long overflow spillway located near the center of the dam and auxiliary spillways located on each side of the amin spillway with a total length of 50.5 feet. The outlet works consist of a 6-inch cast iron high level outlet and an 18-inch corrugated metal low level outlet or blowoff controlled by manually operated gates in a gate chamber at the left end of the main spillway. The dam impounds Burr Pond, a portion of Burr Pond State Park and is used for swimming, fishing and boating. Based on the visual inspection, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. Features that can affect the integrity of the dam are the seepage through the left side of the dam, erosion of the upstream slope of the dam, possible development of internal erosion along the root systems of trees near the downstream toe of the dam, and the poor condition of the low level outlet or blowoff pipe. The Test Flood inflow is 1,425 cfs and the routed outflow of 720 cfs results in a freeboard from water surface to the top of the dam of 1.2 feet. The spillway capacity with the water level at the top of the dam is 1,415 cfs and is equal to 197 percent of the routed Test Flood outflow.

The Batterson Park Pond Dam is an earthfill embankment with stone masonry core that is 1,300 feet long and 30 feet high with a 35 foot wide spillway. It has two, 20 inch blowoffs as well as a line to an adjacent fire hydrant. The dam is classified as intermediate in size and has a high hazard potential based on downstream habitation. based on visual inspection, hydraulic computations and past operational performance, the dam is judged to be in poor condition. Areas of the dam should be studied in order to monitor its behavior such as the central downstream slope which is swampy and shows considerable seepage and the deteriorated spillway channel. The drainage area contributing to the dam is 4.68 square miles. The routed test flood peak outflow (Probable Maximum Flood) is 5,295 cfs which will overtop the dam by 1.21 feet. The project will pass only 29 percent of this peak outflow before overtopping the dam.

The Middle Pond Dam consists of an earth embankment and stone masonry structure with a maximum height of 10 feet a top width of 10 feet and a total length of 535 feet including overflow spillways of 21 feet and 29 feet located near the left end of the dam. A low earthen dike with a maximum height of about 3 feet, a top width of about 5 feet and a length of about 200 feet is located about 150 feet to the left of the dam. Based on the visual inspection, the dam is judged to be in very poor condition. Features that could affect the future integrity of the dam are continued erosion of the upstream slope and crest, trees and stumps on the slopes, seepage through the dam, decreased spillway capacity due to blocking off the right spillway, deterioration of the right spillway, and lack of an operable outlet works. With the right spillway blocked the total spillway capacity of 430 cfs is equal to 17 percent of the Test Flood outflow. With the right spillway restored, the total spillway capacity of 550 cfs would be equal to 22 percent of the Test Flood outflow.

The Farmington Reservoir Dam is an earth embankment impounding an unnamed tributary to the Pequabuck River and is reported to have been built in 1895. The dam (including spillway) is 760 feet long and eight (8) feet wide at the top. The dam has a maximum impoundment capacity of 64 acre-feet and is about 8 feet in height from the toe of the downstream slope to the top of the dam. The spillway is a 32 foot long, and 2.8 foot high, concrete, ogee shaped weir. There is no information available on outlet pipes. Based upon the visual inspection at the site and past performance, the dam is judged to be in poor condition. There are areas requiring attention, monitoring, and maintenance such as seeps along the toe of the embankment, erosion on the upstream and downstream slopes, location and operation of outlet and inlet structures and valves, and removal of trees. Peak inflow to the impoundment at the test flood is 315 cfs; peak outflow is 250 cfs with the maximum stage in the reservoir at 383.7, or 1.0 foot below the top of the dam. Based on this information the dam is not expected to overtop at the test flood condition. The spillway capacity with the pool at top of dam is estimated to be 525 cfs which is greater than 100% of the routed test flood outflow.

The dam consists of a 400 foot long concrete spillway across the Farmington River with an adjacent hydroelectric generating powerhouse, and a 100 foot long butressed concrete transition dam spanning from the 70 foot long powerhouse to a 1050 foot long earth dike running along the pond shoreline. There are two low level sluices through the spillway section which are operated by hydraulic lifts in a chamber above the sluices. The sluices have an inlet elevation approximately 44.5 feet below the crest of the spillway. The 4 inlets to the turbines are approximately 34.5 feet below the crest of the spillway; the discharge flows to a tailrace channel cut into bedrock to the left of the spillway discharge channel. A fish ladder with an inlet about 1.5 feet below the spillway crest also discharges into the tailrace channel. All inlet gates are well maintained and operable. Based upon the visual inspection and past performance, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. No evidence of instability was observed in the dam or its appurtenances. The condition of the earth dike is good, however there are areas requiring attention. Based upon our hydraulics computations, the spillway capacity is 101,000 (cfs), which is equivalent to 51% of the routed Test Flood outflow.

The dam is an earth embankment approximately 15 feet wide at the crest, 443 feet long and 35 above the streambed of West Branch, Naugatuck River. The spillway is a 193 foot long compound concrete weir. Three outlet pipes (30 inch diameter, 6 inch diameter and 16 inch diameter) run from the bottom of the outlet structure through the downstream training wall. The operating mechanisms for these outlets are in the gatehouse approximately on the centerline of the dam. Based upon the visual inspection and past performance of the dam, the dam is judged to be in fair condition. No evidence of instability was observed in any component of the dam. There is extensive spalling of the downstream face of the spillway; spalling of the top face of the upstream training wall; brush, tree growth and tree stumps on the slopes and crest of the embankment; and disrepair of the gatehouse and security fencing. Based upon the size (Intermediate) and hazard classification (High) of the dam in accordance with Corps of Engineers Guidelines, the test flood will be equivalent to the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF). Peak inflow to the reservoir is 20,400 cfs; peak outflow is 19,800 cfs with the dam overtopped by 0.5 feet. Based upon our hydraulics computations, the spillway capacity is 16,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), which is equivalent to 81% of the routed test flood outflow.
