Book Description
This report describes results of an investigation of narrowband interference suppression in a pseudo-noise (PN) spread spectrum digital communication system in which the signal is also distorted by channel multipath and fading. Techniques for determining the coefficients of a linear, interference suppression filter are described, which are based on linear prediction and conventional spectral analysis methods. Numerical results are presented on the effectiveness of the linear filter in suppressing the interference. Error rate results, obtained via Monte Carlo simulation are presented for a receiver that employs interference suppression and equalization for a fading multipath channel. (Author).

Book Description
Of significant interest to the United States military is the ability of an enemy to deny or disrupt the operation of the Global Positioning System. To combat this threat the GPS JPO initiated the Tactical GPS AntiJam Technology project, which yielded a prototype Digital Excision Filter (DEF) to remove narrowband jammers. This research describes the work performed to get tht DEF hardware operational and extends the previous research performed in this area. Comdisco's Signal Processing Worksystem was used to examine the effect of the DEF on the probability of bit error. This research uses peak to average correlation value, probability of bit error, and percent jammer power removed to examine the performance of the DEF. Fourteen jamming scenarios are examined using CW, pulsed CW, and broadband noise jammers. The DEF effectively rejected all of the jammers except the broadband noise jammer. In scenarios other than the broadband noise jammer, the DEF removed over 98% of the jammer power. The bit error rate curves show that the DEF significantly enhanced the performance of the system in extreme jamming environments. The results presented in this research show that the DEF is a viable, robust option to remove narrowband interference.

Book Description
This report presents research results focused on the mitigation of both narrowband and multiple access interference in direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. Both linear and nonlinear adaptive algorithmic approaches are developed and reported. Specific attention has been paid to making the algorithmic practicable. In addition to the algorithmic development, a software simulation for a code division multiple access system is developed using a commercially available programming environment.

Book Description
In this dissertation, interference suppression techniques and applications will be presented for cellular networks with direct-sequence (DS) CDMA and mobile ad hoc networks with frequency-hopped (FH) CDMA. The first part of the dissertation focuses on three novel finger placement designs that effectively equalize the DS-CDMA multi- path downlink channel to restore code orthogonality and consequently suppress multiple-access interference. For typical multipath channel models, the proposed schemes may significantly outperform the uniformly spaced tapped-delay-line equalizer with much less fingers/taps. In addition, analytic insight into the effect of the finger number and the smoothness of the chip pulse are obtained. The second part of the dissertation considers mobile ad hoc networks with FH-CDMA, where error-correcting codes are employed with differential unitary space-time modulation. The use of multiple transmit antennas in FH-CDMA systems, to the best knowledge of the author, has not been proposed in previous literature. The proposed receiver performs decision-feedback demodulation, decision-aided adaptive estimation, and erasure-insertion decoding jointly to suppress arbitrary unknown interference without channel state information. The third part of the dissertation presents network performance analysis for FH-CDMA networks with the proposed transceiver. Information efficiency and transmission range optimization is investigated under realistic time-varying channel models, which extends previous studies based on static channels and/or simplistic physical layer models. Impacts of various design parameters and channel properties on the network performance are revealed. The results also provide guidance on optimizing the modulation and coding scheme from a network perspective.
