Book Description
When a young boy's beloved plum tree falls in a storm, he feels like he's lost both a friend and a connection to his old home. A young boy, recently arrived from Korea, finds a glorious plum tree in his new backyard. It reminds him of a tree his family had back home, and he names it "Plumee" for the deep purple plums on its branches. Whenever the boy is homesick, he knows he can take shelter in Plumee's tall branches. And when a storm brings the old tree down, he and his friends have all kinds of adventures on its branches, as it becomes a dragon, a treehouse, and a ship in their imaginations. But soon it's time to say goodbye when the remains of the tree are taken away. Before long, a new plum tree is planted, new blossoms bloom, and a new friendship takes root. A South Korean immigrant herself, Hope Lim brings her perspective on the struggle for child immigrants to feel at home to bear through spare, poetic text, perfectly matched by soft, lyrical illustrations by Korean artist Il Sung Na. Africa and My New Beginning
Author: Clyde Ann Nelson
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1412035899
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 106
Book Description
My trip to Ghana, Africa was more than I expected. This is a good time to remember the trip that saved my life and gave me my freedom. It all started when I put my feet on African soul for the first time in my life. The soil felt good under my feet and the smell of the elements overwhelmed me. I began to cry, but I knew in my heart I was home at last. The day came for me to visit the slave castles after many days of touring Ghana. The weather was hot, and my body felt numb and chilled. The blood was draining from my body; my hands began to tingle and my feet felt heavy as I walked into this rock-like cave. The cave featured a small hole for air and gave off a dim light. It was musky inside and I felt as if I was going to faint. I listened silently as the tour guide described the people who once lived in this dungeon. The people were small in size and tortured daily in every way possible. A feeling of sadness overwhelmed my body, and I lost my sense of understanding. I was standing in the sewage of my history and the worst thing life could ever offer me. I could feel their blood running through my veins as death was near. Just before I lost consciousness I heard a voice. For a moment I thought, "am I going crazy"? The voice said, "don't be sad, be happy we have survived this journey and you are here to tell our story". These words of wisdom gave me the understanding that the journey my forefathers and mothers took were in God's plans. Suddenly, a cool breeze circled my body, and a warm gentle force lifted me out of the slave castle. I was floating in mid-air while my spirit was being renewed. I cried many tears because of the ill treatment I suffered in the United States as an African-American. But this day my soul was free and the African drums were beating for joy once again. I was home at last. This was truly a time to remember. I found that the lives of Black people in the United States are a profound contrast between the lives of Black People in Africa. My pilgrimage to the West African nations of Ghana and the Ivory Coast ultimately fulfilled a lifelong desire full of excitement, discovery and to an extent closure.

My New Beginning...? (!)

Book Description
Following my miraculous awakening and the “new me” that had actually taken form, I was startled to see the effect it had on the public persona. Consequently, immediately following my remarkable awakening and the celebration that followed thereafter, it had been brought to my attention that my life would no longer be the same as it once was. I soon learned that this was due entirely to the fact that I now possessed two particular unwanted characteristics that surprisingly caused me to be vilified by those of which I, at one time, considered to be my friends. Specifically speaking, following this unforeseen tragedy that befell me and the change of life that resulted thereafter, I was to remain with slightly impaired speech and also a slightly dysfunctional gait. Despite the fact that the overall effects that this tragic event had on my body and mind were relatively minimal, taking into account the overall essence of what had actually taken place, the actual effects that it had on my entire existence were well beyond reasoning. This was so, taking into account the ambiguous nature of that often-misconstrued term disABLED. With that in mind, I would like for the reader(s) of this forthcoming narrative to take heed to the fact that I am no longer in a catatonic state of mind and that this fortuitous event that occurred in my life, which I’ve chosen to write about, is based entirely on truth and is, therefore, entirely factual. However, before I say another syllable or utter another adjective, I would like for the reader(s) of this narrative to kindly take heed and, at the same time, pay credence to the ultimate power that the often-overgeneralized term love possesses. After all, my ultimate survival is a prime example of the veracity of the aforementioned statement.

New Beginnings
Author: Antonina Duridanova
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1649521103
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 360
Book Description
Burning with desire to share the value of freedom, Antonina takes you from her plight in communist Bulgaria to the free shores of America. Following unfortunate events of life in a totalitarian regime in Bulgaria, Antonina bids goodbye to her homeland and flees to the Western world. She provides true experiences and observations of what life is in a communist society-her family's lands and cattle being confiscated by the agricultural labor cooperatives; the censorship of the press and any literal, artistic, and scientific works from the West; religion being prohibited; and any deviation from the norm leading to detention in a labor camp. Her last crossing of the Bulgarian-Yugoslavian border almost costs Antonina her life and makes up her mind to never go back. She describes her life as an immigrant at the refugee camp in Traiskirchen, Austria, while waiting for an American visa. Antonina is ecstatic when the plane cruises over the Statue of Liberty and lands in the most amazing city in the world-New York. She describes how she could taste, smell, feel, and touch freedom as she gets off the plane, ready to embark on new adventures. Antonina gets educated and becomes a good specialist in taxation, working for the United States Treasury Department. Ultimately, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, she is invited to go back to Bulgaria and fix a broken tax system as a representative of the United States government. Her work in the newly democratic society of Bulgaria paved the way for the country to become a member of NATO, escaping Soviet influence, and later being accepted in the family of the European Union. 20
