The author depicts life in Bosnia (first as part of Yugoslavia then as part of the independent state/of Croatia), service in the Croatian Navy, training on the Sailing Ship Horst Wessel (now in the U.S. renamed Eagle), life in Titos Yugoslavia and, in 1949, escape to Italy across the Adriatic Sea.
