Book Description
A classic Canadian story of the bravery and ingenuity of three animals who find their way home. First published in 1961, The Incredible Journey tells the story of three pets: a young Labrador retriever, an old bull terrier, and a Siamese cat. While their owners are away in England, they are being cared for by a family friend at his home in the country. But a miscommunication occurs between the friend and his housekeeper when he goes on a hunting trip, and the animals are left alone for a several hours, with a gnawing instinct that something has gone wrong. They soon set off on a journey to find home, which instinct tells them is to the west. They travel 400 kilometres across the Northern Ontario wilderness, facing many obstacles along the way: swift-flowing rivers and the rugged landscape; wild animals and unsympathetic humans; starvation, injuries and sheer exhaustion. Separately they would not have survived, but together this disparate group prevails, and they find their way home to the family they love.

Book Description
“My Unbelievable Journey” is a powerful autobiography from a flight aircrewman’s perspective. During his service, he and his crew were involved in numerous unique and dangerous missions while supporting our country and NATO allies. The flights take the reader on a worldwide journey divulging what our crewmen endure and encounter in their daily lives. It reveals the impact on their families being away from home for weeks while serving and protecting our nation. The story places the reader on the ground, both in hostile and non-hostile environments, many of which are directly in “harm’s way.” Various humanitarian missions are covered from earthquake relief in Japan and Turkey to joint military exercises in Iran and Sardinia. Several “special missions” are spotlighted like the ill-fated C-5 crash, the prelude to the “Baby-lift” evacuation in Vietnam, the Syrian-Egyptian war support in Israel, and the transportation of cruise missiles in Europe. At a U-2 site in Europe, a real-life spy encounter is detailed, along with a massive Iranian evacuation that led to hostages taken. The book describes, in depth, the survival training which flight crews must complete. The author explains escape and evasion tactics and how to survive a crash at sea. It is a candid narration, guaranteed to leave the reader with that feeling of “Mission Accomplished.”

Book Description
The remarkable woman at heart of the smash New York Times bestseller and Oscar-winning film Hidden Figures tells the full story of her life, including what it took to work at NASA, help land the first man on the moon, and live through a century of turmoil and change. In 2015, at the age of 97, Katherine Johnson became a global celebrity. President Barack Obama awarded her the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom—the nation’s highest civilian honor—for her pioneering work as a mathematician on NASA’s first flights into space. Her contributions to America’s space program were celebrated in a blockbuster and Academy-award nominated movie. In this memoir, Katherine shares her personal journey from child prodigy in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia to NASA human computer. In her life after retirement, she served as a beacon of light for her family and community alike. Her story is centered around the basic tenets of her life—no one is better than you, education is paramount, and asking questions can break barriers. The memoir captures the many facets of this unique woman: the curious “daddy’s girl,” pioneering professional, and sage elder. This multidimensional portrait is also the record of a century of racial history that reveals the influential role educators at segregated schools and Historically Black Colleges and Universities played in nurturing the dreams of trailblazers like Katherine. The author pays homage to her mentor—the African American professor who inspired her to become a research mathematician despite having his own dream crushed by racism. Infused with the uplifting wisdom of a woman who handled great fame with genuine humility and great tragedy with enduring hope, My Remarkable Journey ultimately brings into focus a determined woman who navigated tough racial terrain with soft-spoken grace—and the unrelenting grit required to make history and inspire future generations.

Book Description
I came from a poor family, but was afforded all the opportunities to make myself a better person than my parents, who did not have those opportunities. My childhood days were hard living on a farm, getting up early in the morning, doing my chores and then walking two miles to school. My high school days was not as good as expected and I put that to the conditions under which I had to deal with, living away from home, sometimes under unpleasant situations, and then getting up at 5:00 am to travel by train to Georgetown to get to school. I remember reading that Abraham Lincoln had to walk six miles per day to go to school, and he became one of the best President of the United States of America. My studies were cut short to assist my family when they were faced with major problems. I realized that the experience I gained by joining the SSU made me a better person. As I began my life anew I was determined to be successful in whatever my endeavors were. Success comes with hard work and perseverance and I took advantage of all the windows of opportunities that came my way, like forming Patrician Phone Corporation and South Jamaica Services, and running for Congress. To the readers of my autobiography, especially the younger generation, I want to tell you that the sky is not the limit. There are many opportunities out there, you have to take the time to look for what interests you. If I had to live my life over again, I would probably do the same things all over again, but I think with less mistakes. I have no regrets because I did it my all way.

Book Description
Named a Best Book of the Year for the Know-It-All by The Globe and Mail In this richly illustrated volume, a leading neurobiologist presents fascinating stories of plant migration that reveal unexpected connections between nature and culture. When we talk about migrations, we should study plants to understand that these phenomena are unstoppable. In the many different ways plants move, we can see the incessant action and drive to spread life that has led plants to colonize every possible environment on earth. The history of this relentless expansion is unknown to most people, but we can begin our exploration with these surprising tales, engagingly told by Stefano Mancuso. Generation after generation, using spores, seeds, or any other means available, plants move in the world to conquer new spaces. They release huge quantities of spores that can be transported thousands of miles. The number and variety of tools through which seeds spread is astonishing: we have seeds dispersed by wind, by rolling on the ground, by animals, by water, or by a simple fall from the plant, which can happen thanks to propulsive mechanisms, the swaying of the mother plant, the drying of the fruit, and much more. In this accessible, absorbing overview, Mancuso considers how plants convince animals to transport them around the world, and how some plants need particular animals to spread; how they have been able to grow in places so inaccessible and inhospitable as to remain isolated; how they resisted the atomic bomb and the Chernobyl disaster; how they are able to bring life to sterile islands; how they can travel through the ages, as they sail around the world.
