Book Description
Parkinson's Disease is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world. Most people with the disease are diagnosed in their fifties or later, however, it is not just a disease of the elderly. Up to 10% of those with the condition develop the disease in their forties or younger at which point, it is termed "Young Onset Parkinson's Disease" or YOPD. When I was diagnosed with YOPD at the age of 43, I didn't know where to turn for information. I listened to podcasts from specialists, read books, attended support groups, joined Facebook pages, talked with my physician, but what I really wanted was to hear from people my age that were contending with the disease. So I determined that that the best way to learn was to talk to people and understand what its like to live with YOPD.This book is a collection of 10 interviews with individuals that have been living with the disease for as little as 1 to 23 years. Some are negotiating powerful careers, taking leadership roles in their professional organizations, competing in endurance events, starting foundations, volunteering in their communities, playing team sports, writing books, raising money for research and raising kids. However what characterizes them most is what they are not doing, which is sitting around waiting for the disease to consume them. Written primarily for the newly diagnosed, this book is also for the care givers, family members, friends and associates who, like me, are approaching this disease for the first time or have questions about what to expect. As you read this book my hope is that you'll develop a better understanding of what disease progression looks like and how you can support the person with Parkinson's in your life. Braddock's Defeat
Author: David Lee Preston
Publisher: Pivotal Moments in American Hi
ISBN: 0199845328
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 481
Book Description
On July 9, 1755, British and colonial troops under the command of General Edward Braddock suffered a crushing defeat to French and Native American enemy forces in Ohio Country. Known as the Battle of the Monongahela, the loss altered the trajectory of the Seven Years' War in America, escalating the fighting and shifting the balance of power. An unprecedented rout of a modern and powerful British army by a predominantly Indian force, Monongahela shocked the colonial world--and also planted the first seeds of an independent American consciousness. The culmination of a failed attempt to capture Fort Duquesne from the French, Braddock's Defeat was a pivotal moment in American and world history. While the defeat is often blamed on blundering and arrogance on the part of General Braddock--who was wounded in battle and died the next day--David Preston's gripping new work argues that such a claim diminishes the victory that Indian and French forces won by their superior discipline and leadership. In fact, the French Canadian officer Captain Beaujeu had greater tactical skill, reconnaissance, and execution, and his Indian allies were the most effective and disciplined troops on the field. Preston also explores the long shadow cast by Braddock's Defeat over the 18th century and the American Revolution two decades later. The campaign had been an awakening to empire for many British Americans, spawning ideas of American identity and anticipating many of the political and social divisions that would erupt with the outbreak of the Revolution. Braddock's Defeat was the defining generational experience for many British and American officers, including Thomas Gage, Horatio Gates, and perhaps most significantly, George Washington. A rich battle history driven by a gripping narrative and an abundance of new evidence,Braddock's Defeat presents the fullest account yet of this defining moment in early American history.

Book Description
If every life is a tapestry, there are bound to be a few dropped stitches along the way. So it is for Ella, Raynie, Jessie and Meg. Friends since the 1970s, they are in pursuit of lost threads in need of mending. But before they can find them, the women become caught up in a nest of knots that test their friendship. In this warm and compelling sequel to Sunshine Girls, the four women may be twenty-eight years older but in some ways are none the wiser. Take Ella who, in an effort to repair an unravelling relationship with her daughter, needs to come clean with her about a long-held secret. Raynie, her own life fraying more every day feels compelled to revisit the decision she made years before. Then there's Meg who is quite happy in the safe world she has created for herself, while Jessie struggles to start a new life. Together Ella and Raynie-along with Ella's Aunt Ruby and Ruby's ex-biker boyfriend-travel to New York City and Nashville in pursuit of answers. They find some, but not necessarily the ones they were seeking. In the end it doesn't matter. Every stitch in each woman's tapestry is ultimately revealed to be sewn together exactly as it should be. And the result is a beautifully tailored patchwork of friendship, experience and life.
