Book Description
A sensory and poetic guide to the island of Cyprus. The island of Cyprus has been a site of global history and conquest, and its strategic position means it has been coveted by one foreign power after another. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Genoese, Ottomans, and British have all left their mark. Along with the Roman and Byzantine ruins of Salamis, the island holds impressive monuments dating from the Frankish and Venetian times: the Abbey of Bellapais, the fortified harbor of Kyrenia, and the magnificent cathedrals of Nicosia and Famagusta, the setting for Shakespeare’s Othello. Having lived in Cyprus for three years, Joachim Sartorius returns to the island’s cultures and legends and brings to life the colors and lights of the Levant area of the Middle East. He sifts through the sediments of the island’s history, including its division after the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the difficulties that followed. Rather than focusing solely on historical or political factors, this book is the work of a poet, who, with the help of both Greek and Turkish Cypriot friends, tries to understand this unique place.

Cyprus
Author: David Hannay
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0857711946
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 267
Book Description
The Cyprus problem has defeated all attempts to resolve it for more than forty years. From 1996 onwards the UN, with strong support from the US, the UK and other EU members, mounted the most sustained of all the efforts to reach an agreement, so that a reunited Cyprus could join the EU in May 2004. Although it came closer to success than any previous attempt, this one failed too. From his unique position as the former British Special Representative for Cyprus, Lord (formerly Sir David) Hannay tells the story of these negotiations. What results is a revealing first-hand account of a profoundly complex situation, an exceptional reference point for all those interested in the region.

Moving On
Author: Paul Thomas Cox PhD
Publisher: Balboa Press
ISBN: 1982250356
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
It is the role of locals to report on a 'Preacher Kid's activities, at least in this book, the author, whether preteen or teenager, took opportunity to provide many escapades worth their reporting! This pattern continues throughout his later experiences during various careers. As a teenager during WWII provided early income opportunities, as all men over 18 away to war, thus saving money for college, early dating & marriage, leading to early maturing with family responsibilities. A decade of farming providing practical experience enabling better education choices, even all the while raising his family. By educating himself first through BS, MS, PhD, plus wife with BA, then ex-wife through law school, followed by 3-children from ASU, NAU and U of A, 21-year span of college tuition, probably a record! How his life changed from this long maturing and educational period, throughout following activities in public, private and international careers, provides an interesting perspective on broader societal differences experienced in many countries, including the USA. Middle East, North Africa societies are far different than South Equatorial Africa, Asia and/or Europe and the Americas. The author's perspective greatly aided by having wives at different stages of his careers, first American, 2nd Persia (Iran), 3rd Philippines. Reaching apex of careers at age 78 was an exceptional feat then upon retirement until now the author's reflection on life's experiences and potential societal change are unique indeed!

Cyprus and its Places of Desire
Author: Lisa Dikomitis
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0857721232
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
By the summer of 1974, the island of Cyprus was home to two separate refugee communities. Charting the displaced cultures of the Greek Cypriot community in the south, and that of the Turkish communities in the north, Lisa Dikomitis provides a moving and detailed qualitative ethnography of the refugee experience in Cyprus. In her groundbreaking study, made possible by the opening of the north/south border during fieldwork, Dikomitis demonstrates how both ethnic groups are linked by their histories of displacement to a single 'place of desire', a small mountainous village located in the north of the island. By identifying the specific social and cultural meanings that the notions of home, identity, justice and suffering have come to have for both populations, Cyprus and its Places of Desire will appeal to scholars and students of Cypriot, Turkish and Greek history as well as those with an interest in the fields of anthropology, sociology and identity.
