Book Description
Change is the only constant, goes one saying that is often used to describe the ever-evolving world around us. Nowhere is this change more evident than in the lives of children who face new pressures, challenges and demands on a regular basis. To mark Children's Day, our Cover Story delves deep into critical issues impacting a child's development years and tries to decipher what's needed to help them navigate this crucial phase. Ratan Tata strode like a colossus across the national landscape while also making a mark on the global scene not just with his vision and acumen as an industrialist but also with a deft human touch that left an indelible mark wherever he ventured. A special feature pays tribute to what the author describes as his vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to inclusive growth. Urban mobility has become a hot topic of debate, discussion, and roadmaps, with a special emphasis on efficient and sustainable public transport systems. Odisha is no exception, and the success of Bhubaneswar's ‘Mo Bus’ and ‘Mo ERide’ services has added a fresh dimension to this discussion on a pressing urban challenge. City Beat provides a 360-degree view of the subject, complete with the views of the end-user - the city commuter. Cyclone Dana left destruction in its wake last month, disrupting life and livelihoods but Odisha's “zero casualty mission” was a success. A photo feature brings you snapshots from across the affected regions. It's an action-filled November for Odisha's sports lovers. The state hosted the prestigious ITF World Tennis Tour Men’s $25,000 Tournament 2024 at the Tennis Center, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. Around the same time, the Odisha men’s hockey team headed off to Chennai to compete in the 14th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2024. Read more about these events in City Sports. Re-releases have been all the rage in Bollywood these past few months, with classics as well as box-office hits drawing in crowds at the theatres. Odia film aficionados, meanwhile, are still waiting for something similar to come their way. Screen Shots goes behind the scenes to bring you more on this. City Flix reviews CTRL, Netflix's latest release. Elsewhere in this edition, City Health helps you catch up with a novel wellness technique known as Expressive Arts Therapy. City Lights, on the other hand, talks to Odias living outside Odisha as they tell us about how they celebrate festivals away from home.

Book Description
Another year has come to an end, leaving behind a kaleidoscope of memories. For Odisha, 2023 was an eventful year when it came to governance, development, sports, and business. Our Cover Story for this edition brings you snapshots of the year’s significant policy decisions, major achievements in sports, landmarks from the corporate & business world, and important happenings in the Odia entertainment industry. Located in close proximity to buildings that seat the ‘who’s-who’ of Odisha’s power establishment, the Bhubaneswar Club has over the years evolved as an enduring symbol of socializing and celebration. With a history of 74 years, the club not only boasts of a rich legacy but also stands tall as a symbol of contemporary urban life. In City Tales, we walk you through all that the club stands for. Bhubaneswar was recently witness to a memorable congregation of vintage motor vehicles that reflected the glory, beauty, and craftsmanship of an era gone by. The inaugural Odisha Concours D’Elegance saw the participation of 50 eye-catching vintage cars from all over the country. Read all about this one-of-a-kind event in City Lights. A New Year brings with it new beginnings as well as new resolutions that are meant to set the tone for the next 12 months. City Lights brings to you a special feature tracing the origins of New Year resolutions and speaking to people from different walks of life to figure out the practice means to them. December 1, 2023 will be remembered for a film that not only created a storm at the box office but also sparked off an intense debate that shows no signs of dying down soon. ‘Animal’, the multi-lingual blockbuster, has received flak for normalizing misogyny and its controversial portrayal of gender dynamics. In Screen Shots, we talk to some prominent names from the Odia entertainment industry on the ongoing debate that has brought with it its own share of polarization and toxicity. Another issue that has become a matter of debate in recent days is that of paid menstrual leave for women. The issue has taken centre stage once again after Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani expressed her opposition to the concept on the grounds that it could lead to discrimination against women in the workforce. In City Beat, we reach out to people for their views on the subject

Our Cover Story for this edition breaks down the budget document to explain what it holds for the future of the country. When it comes to safeguarding the rich cultural heritage and legacy of western Odisha, there is one person whose efforts over the years have the potential to inspire many others. In City Lights, we turn the spotlight on Rajat Kumar Panigrahi of Nuapada district and his stellar contribution towards preservation of the region's indigenous art forms. July 14, 2024 will go down as a day of considerable significance in the contemporary history of Lord Jagannath's Sri Mandir in Puri. The temple's sacred treasury, the Ratna Bhandar, was opened after 46 years. City Lights brings you all the information about the entire process as well as the history of the Ratna Bhandar. Attending the 26th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 26) in November, 2021, India announced its target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070. In line with this commitment, India set up the National Green Hydrogen Mission in January 2023. A special feature sheds more light on this initiative and its critical role. The rainy season is a challenging phase when it comes to skincare, with humidity, wet spells, and fluctuating temperatures all acting as negative contributing factors. Building State Capability
Author: Matt Andrews
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198747489
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
Governments play a major role in the development process, and constantly introduce reforms and policies to achieve developmental objectives. Many of these interventions have limited impact, however; schools get built but children don't learn, IT systems are introduced but not used, plans are written but not implemented. These achievement deficiencies reveal gaps in capabilities, and weaknesses in the process of building state capability. This book addresses these weaknesses and gaps. It starts by providing evidence of the capability shortfalls that currently exist in many countries, showing that many governments lack basic capacities even after decades of reforms and capacity building efforts. The book then analyses this evidence, identifying capability traps that hold many governments back - particularly related to isomorphic mimicry (where governments copy best practice solutions from other countries that make them look more capable even if they are not more capable) and premature load bearing (where governments adopt new mechanisms that they cannot actually make work, given weak extant capacities). The book then describes a process that governments can use to escape these capability traps. Called PDIA (problem driven iterative adaptation), this process empowers people working in governments to find and fit solutions to the problems they face. The discussion about this process is structured in a practical manner so that readers can actually apply tools and ideas to the capability challenges they face in their own contexts. These applications will help readers devise policies and reforms that have more impact than those of the past.
