Book Description
More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.

Book Description
Engineering Properties of Soils and Rocks, Third Edition serves as a guide to the engineering properties and behavior of soils and rocks. The text also complements other texts on rock and soil mechanics. The book covers topics such as the properties and classification of soils such as tills and other kinds of soils related to cold climates, tropical soils, and organic soils such as peat. The text also includes the engineering behavior and properties, classification and description, discontinuities, and weathering of rocks and rock masses. The monograph is recommended for engineers who would like to know about the properties of soils and rocks and the application of their study in the field of engineering.

Book Description
This state-of-the-practice report on the design and development of roads and airfields is the eighth monograph in a series prepared by the Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Previous reports in the series covered such topics as frost action and its control embankment design, and arctic coastal processes. This book discusses such topics as: 1) Route-location/siting; 2) frost action; 3) design for permafrost conditions; 4) low temperature cracking; 5) maintenance; 6) use of geosynthetics; and 7) materials specifications and testing. This monograph contributes a substantial amount of new material to the Cold Regions Engineering series.

Book Description
Prepared by the Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of ASCE. The design of engineering projects in frozen ground requires thermal design considerations in addition to standard geotechnical design. Factors that influence the thermal characteristics of a site include climatological data, microclimatic characteristics, local hydrology, soil properties, and disturbance. This monograph presents ground temperature observations, procedures for temperature monitoring, analytical methods for ground thermal regime calculations, and ground thermal properties. Active and passive techniques for ground temperature control and ground thawing methods are also presented, followed by case histories of ground temperature effects.
