The purpose of this research was to describe the status of music education in the home schools of Florida. The specific problems of the study were to (1) investigate the demographic characteristics of home school families in Florida, (2) determine the primary reasons why home educators included or did not include music in their curricula, (3) investigate the use of music in home school instruction, and (4) investigate the assessment of music learning in the home school curriculum as determined by the 2008 Florida Statutes. Using the survey technique in research, 367 home schooling families who were members of the Florida Coalition of Christian Private Schools Association, selected umbrella schools, and support groups participated in the study. Results indicated that most of the respondents in this study were Caucasian, well-educated, religious, members of a home school association, and resided in a suburban area with a household that included two or three children, and the mother was the primary educator. The three most important goals for including music in the home schools were to enjoy listening to music, to play an instrument, and to present a well-balanced curriculum. The three top reasons for not including music in home schools were lack of funding, limited parental skills, and low student interest. Most home educators provided music experiences through a variety of approaches, including private lessons, ensembles, church and communitymusicactivities,supportgroups,andcooperativeprograms. Mostofthe materials used were instrumental method books, audio recordings, and repertoire books. Further, the three top music assessments used to monitor the progress of home learners were observations, performances, and demonstrations that were generally assessed on a weekly basis.
