Book Description
It was a long and troublesome history but an inspiring and excltmg one too-from the time of Zielonko, a Russian pathologist who in 1874 first transplanted muscles, to the present day microneurovascular muscle graft. Today we know that for functional recovery of muscle tissue vascularisation and neurotisation are of equal importance. With the establishment of microsurgery of small vessels and nerves, its application for myopias tic operations has gained increasing interest. It was my intention to bring together leading authorities from all over the world in the field of muscle transplantation. Open questions and unsolved problems had to be discussed between research workers in the basic medical sciences and our clinical colleagues; in this way progress can best be accomplished. This publication is the result of the "Vienna Muscle Symposium" (June 13-14, 1980). It gives an up-to-date viewpoint and should act as a stimulus to all who are interested in this particular field. I wish to express my sincere thanks to those who have contributed to this publication, to the two co-editors J. Holle and B. M. Carlson for their effective cooperation, and to Springer-Verlag Wien for their prompt and most efficient work.

Book Description
Nerve, Organ, and Tissue Regeneration: Research Perspectives presents the proceedings of a symposium held in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, on September 21–24, 1982. This book explores the neural and nonneural areas of regeneration, with emphasis on the nervous system. Organized into six parts encompassing 22 chapters, this compilation of papers examines the commitment of the Veterans Administration to deal with the clinical problem of spinal cord injury by establishing 19spinal cord injury treatment and rehabilitation centers throughout the United States. This book then discusses the characteristics of the neuronal response to axon injury, which vary from cellular hypertrophy and heightened metabolism to cell death. Other chapters consider the three phases of axonal regeneration, including sprout formation, elongation, and maturation. The final chapter deals with the structural and functional alterations that developed when the length of the mammalian intestine is shortened by excision or by-pass of a long segment. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, orthopedic surgeons, and neuroscientists.

Book Description
This unique publication was written by experts who have made significant contributions to the development of reconstructive microsurgery and vascularized composite allotransplantation and are likely to shape its future. The book is divided into three major sections. The first presents the state-of-the-art of autologous microsurgical reconstruction. It summarizes current achievements, highlights the shortcomings of currently available techniques, and prepares the reader for the next evolutionary step: allotransplantation. Section two is a comprehensive review of allotransplantation, from immunology to surgical techniques. Finally, for those interested in establishing a comprehensive center for vascularized composite allotransplantation, section three provides important lessons from the successful Chang Gung Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Center. From Auto- to Allotransplantation is indeed the only up-to-date and complete reference available on the topic. Scholars and research fellows interested in transplantation will benefit greatly from this work. It is also an invaluable resource for plastic, orthopedic, hand, ENT, oromaxillofacial, and general surgeons as well as for residents.
