Book Description
FAT cat? No way! PHAT cat! This 35 lb. cat will only accept that? but with a side of tuna fish please. Murphy, the phat cat, is unique because of his thirty-five-pound body size and his warm and sensitive nature. There are two things that this cat can't refuse: lending a helping paw to his fellow-furry neighbors and his cravings for tuna fish. The gossip queen of cats, Maisie Mums, comes to Murphy to fill him in with the problem on how the neighborhood cats have fallen victim to annoying pestering from a gang of bullying burrowing owls. The gang is led by an old, wise owl named, Don Owl Leon, and they have just recently moved to his neighborhood of Majestic Groves, causing chaos. With the advice from his chameleon adviser, Gaidan, the protection from his bodyguard bulldog, Ruthless Riley, and the assistance of his friends, the two Siberian husky sisters, he decides to try and come up with a solution. However, the plan changes when the owls kidnap, Peanut, his sister-cat. Murphy must come up with a new answer, and his true feline character is put to the test. After coming to the realization that the owls are acting malicious due to their subconscious fear of loss of habitat, Murphy and some friends decide to help the owls by putting together a project to preserve the owls' existence. They can't do it alone; the implementation of the project depends on Murphy's human owner, Teresa. They mysteriously give her the plan for a project that can change the fate of the owls, and little does she know that the animals there had something to do with its creation. In the end, the animals realize they're more alike than they are different. Why can't all types of species live in harmony among one another? There's enough room for all of them, even if it is together in small suburbia in Florida.

Life and Def
Author: Russell Simmons
Publisher: Crown
ISBN: 0609807153
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 290
Book Description
Russell Simmons, the original and eternal hip-hop mogul, is one of the most innovative and influential figures in modern American business and culture. When no one outside of inner-city New York had even heard of hip-hop, Simmons saw the seeds of a global force that would change the way people talk, dress, listen to music, and choose the heroes they hang on their walls. Today, he oversees a sprawling, multimillion-dollar empire of culture-defining businesses in everything from music to fashion, advertising to film, and media to visual art. At the same time he’s broadened his interests and influence and pushed hip-hop to new plateaus of power and relevance. Life and Def is a one-of-a-kind tale that interweaves the remarkable journey of Russell Simmons with the story of the culture he’s transformed and been transformed by. In his own brash, compelling voice, Simmons chronicles his numerous business successes and occasional failures. He tells the story of the founding of the legendary Def Jam Records, whose roster stretches from original rap icons like L.L. Cool J, Public Enemy, and the Beastie Boys to today’s top stars, including Jay-Z and DMX. He traces the launching of Def Comedy Jam, the long-running hit television series that introduced a new generation of black comedic stars to America, from Martin Lawrence and Bill Bellamy to Bernie Mac and Chris Rock. He spins hilarious tales of his adventures in Hollywood, where he’s produced hit movies like Eddie Murphy’s The Nutty Professor and worked with quirky geniuses like Abel Ferrara. He also tells the story of Phat Farm, the wildly successful pioneering urban clothing label whose origins lay in Russell’s longtime fascination with fashion (and fashion models). Simmons’s story is also one of personal transformation, from the driven man who in the heady days of early success indulged himself with drugs, sex, and world-class decadence to the husband and father he is today, a man who has found meaning in activism, philanthropy, and spiritual practice while never losing his passion for the social, political, artistic, and commercial potential of hip-hop. Through it all he relates telling anecdotes about the characters he’s dealt with: models and gangsters, street poets and gurus, and major players like Donald Trump, Sean Combs, Jon Peters, and Tupac Shakur. Full of advice, opinions, and behind-the-scenes scoop, Life and Def is the story of the quintessential hip-hop life.

Gradual failure : the air war over North Vietnam 1965-1966
Author: Jacob Van Staaveren
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428990186
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
Of the many facets of the American war in Southeast Asia debated by U.S. authorities in Washington, by the military services and the public, none has proved more controversial than the air war against North Vietnam. The air war s inauguration with the nickname Rolling Thunder followed an eleven-year American effort to induce communist North Vietnam to sign a peace treaty without openly attacking its territory. Thus, Rolling Thunder was a new military program in what had been a relatively low-key attempt by the United States to win the war within South Vietnam against insurgent communist Viet Cong forces, aided and abetted by the north. The present volume covers the first phase of the Rolling Thunder campaign from March 1965 to late 1966. It begins with a description of the planning and execution of two initial limited air strikes, nicknamed Flaming Dart I and II. The Flaming Dart strikes were carried out against North Vietnam in February 1965 as the precursors to a regular, albeit limited, Rolling Thunder air program launched the following month. Before proceeding with an account of Rolling Thunder, its roots are traced in the events that compelled the United States to adopt an anti-communist containment policy in Southeast Asia after the defeat of French forces by the communist Vietnamese in May 1954.

Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and Use of Research Animals
Author: Committee on Occupational Safety and Health in Research Animal Facilities
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309520398
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 167
Book Description
Much has been written about the care of research animals. Yet little guidance has appeared on protecting the health and safety of the people who care for or use these animals. This book, an implementation handbook and companion to Guide For the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, identifies principles for building a program and discusses the accountability of institutional leaders, managers, and employees for a program's success. It provides a detailed description of risks-- physical and chemical hazards, allergens and zoonoses, and hazards from experiments--which will serve as a continuing reference for the laboratory. The book offers specific recommendations for controlling risk through administrative procedures, facility design, engineering controls, and periodic evaluations. The volume focuses on the worker, with detailed discussions of work practices, the use of personal protective gear, and the development of an emergency response plan. This handbook will be invaluable to administrators, researchers, and employees in any animal research facility. It will also be of interest to personnel in zoos, animal shelters, and veterinary facilities.
