Book Description
This is a ‘Who-dun-it’ novel about a murder of a member of the Portland, Maine Flounders organization, a minor league basketball team, affiliated with Boston’s major league team, the Shamrocks. The Flounders were an eclectic ensemble of U.S. and foreign players, young and old, black and white, urban and city, ex-college and ex-high-school players. The reader will be treated to a modicum of basketball strategies, enough to understand the teams’ journey to the “G” League national championship, but will not be pulled into the weeds of basketball. The coach, Butch Baker, a farm boy who entered the Marines after graduating from Annapolis got shot in the arm from a Taliban sniper and upon recovery played several years for the Boston Shamrocks. The tension between the team and coach is gripping as the cultures and backgrounds clash. The coach does not understand the Woke culture and is oblivious to the triggering he causes with some of his draconian remarks and actions. The reader, teased by the title, knows a murder will happen but gets sidetracked by the personal interaction between players with players and the coach with players. The reader is attached to the wily coach, but knows his imperfections and awaits a foul play. Suspense continues in the book until late in the game when the culprit is finally revealed.

Book Description
Short stories and a novella from one of crime fiction's most revered writers. Whether they're cops or conmen, savage killers or creative types, gangsters or God-fearing citizens, George Pelecanos' characters are always engaged in a fight for their lives. They fight to advance or simply to survive; they fight against odds, against enemies, even against themselves. In this, his first collection of stories, the acclaimed novelist introduces readers to a vivid and eclectic cast of combatants. A seasoned claims investigator tracks a supposedly dead man from Miami to Brazil, only to be thrown off his game by a kid from the local slum. An aging loser takes a last stab at respectability by becoming a police informant. A Greek-American couple adopts an interracial trio of sons and then struggles to keep their family together, giving us a stirring bit of background on one of Pelecanos' most beloved protagonists, Spero Lucas. In the title novella - which takes its name from Hollywood slang for the last shot of the day, the one that comes before the liquor shots begin - we go behind the scenes of a television cop show, where a writer gets caught up in a drama more real than anything he could have conjured for a script. By turns heartbreaking and humane, brutal and funny, these finely constructed tales expose the violence and striving beneath the surface of any city and within any human heart. Tough, sexy, fast-paced, and crackling with energy, The Martini Shot is Pelecanos at his very best.

Book Description
A historical mystery with “first-rate wartime Chicago atmosphere” and starring a ballplayer who “turns double plays and solves murders with equal grace” (Publishers Weekly). While the nation wages war against Germany in 1918, utility infielder Mickey Rawlings has been traded to the North Side of Chicago. He's batting a career high (a respectable .274) and the Cubs are in first place. For the first time in a long while Mickey is feeling financially secure enough to buy furniture. That's when his best friend—rookie Willie Kaiser—is shot dead right on the diamond. While the official explanation is "accidental death from a stray bullet," Mickey thinks someone's taken the anti-war sentiment too far. Between collapsing bleacher seats and pretzel sabotage in the stands, Mickey's search for answers takes him from silent movies to speakeasies to the stockyards. As long as he keeps fouling off clues, it's only a matter of time before a killer is caught in a rundown—or Mickey is tagged out permanently. “[A] quietly effective portrait of wartime Chicago in the throes of painful German-baiting and on the verge of Prohibition.”—Kirkus Reviews Praise for the Mickey Rawlings Baseball Mysteries “Full of life.”—The New York Times Book Review “A perfect book for the rain delay…a winner.” —USA Today “Delightful…period detail that will leave readers eager for subsequent innings.”—Publishers Weekly

Manassas, Virginia, near Bull Run Creek, is in their sights. The very next morning, as Congress convenes once more, a dead body is found hanging from the crane beneath the unfinished dome of the Capitol. Lincoln’s close confidant, Adam Speed Quinn, is called upon to determine whether the man had taken his own life, or if someone had helped him. With the assistance of Dr. George Hilton and journalist Sophie Gates, Quinn investigates what turns out to be murder. But the former scout is about to be blindsided, for a Southern sympathizer in the city is running a female spy network reporting to the Confederacy, and she has an insidious plot to foil the Union Army’s march to Manassas by employing the charms of one Constance Lemagne to get as close to Adam as possible . . .
