Book Description
The Molecular Aspects of Autoimmunity contains a selection of the papers presented at the first of a series of biannual meetings on molecular aspects of autoimmunity held in L'Esterel, Quebec, Canada, October 30-November 2, 1988. The book contains 20 chapters and begins with a study of the expression of the Ly-1 gene and V gene families in autoantibodies. This is followed by separate chapters on the structural characteristics of human IgM autoantibodies; human IgV gene segments for autoantibodies; and the genetic basis of anti-DNA immune responses. Subsequent chapters cover topics such as the epibodies from the immune response to the acetylcholine receptor (AChR); the specificities and idiotypes of anti-histone H1 autoantibodies; T cell tolerance; and T cell antigen receptor (TCR) gene biology and the genomic composition and expressed repertoire of these genes in several autoimmune and normal mouse strains. Also discussed are MHC Class II associations with autoimmune disorders such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disease.

Book Description
This publication sets out to explore the issue of harmonization of national pesticides Maximum Residues Limits (MRLs) with Codex pesticide MRLs from different angles, by taking rice as a case study. Part A identifies the level of harmonization in main rice producing and trading countries and explores the possible effects on trade, while Part B investigates the reasons behind differing levels of harmonization. Its broader objective is to offer insights for decision-makers involved in setting of standards and design of food policy at national and international level on the significance of harmonization of pesticide MRLs.

Book Description
Pesticide Residues: A Contribution to their Interpretation, Relevance and Legislation contains the papers presented at two special Symposia held in the Pesticide Residues Section at the Fourth International Congress of Pesticide Chemistry (lUPAC). This book is organized into two parts encompassing 17 chapters. Part I focuses on the accuracy of any statement on the amount of residue a sample contains, which is influenced by the interaction of multiple factors. This part specifically discusses some of these factors and their bearing on the analytical result of pesticide residue analysis. Part II deals with the complex problem of whether and how the unavoidable uncertainties in analytical findings can be matched to a legislative machinery accustomed to operating with rigid data. This part also covers the principles for the permission of pesticides from the food-hygienic point of view, with emphasis on regulatory toxicology and tolerances of pesticide residues. This book will be of value to toxicologists, agriculturists, public health workers, and legislators.

Book Description
Regulating Safety of Traditional and Ethnic Foods, a compilation from a team of experts in food safety, nutrition, and regulatory affairs, examines a variety of traditional foods from around the world, their risks and benefits, and how regulatory steps may assist in establishing safe parameters for these foods without reducing their cultural or nutritive value. Many traditional foods provide excellent nutrition from sustainable resources, with some containing nutraceutical properties that make them not only a source of cultural and traditional value, but also valuable options for addressing the growing need for food resources. This book discusses these ideas and concepts in a comprehensive and scientific manner. - Addresses the need for balance in safety regulation and retaining traditional food options - Includes case studies from around the world to provide practical insight and guidance - Presents suggestions for developing appropriate global safety standards
