This dissertation challenges the common framing of "religion" that emerged from international development institutions in the late 1990s, with specific focus on how it has impacted sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) concerns in India. Though this reconsideration of religion in development was a step forward from the earlier "secularization thesis," the narrow, normative, and instrumentalizing framing of religion reproduced problematic tropes about women oppressed by religion and culture, while obscuring many of the actual causes of barriers to SRHR. Building on my ethnographic research in north India and applying a feminist intersectionality lens, I argue we must consider the significant impact of the prevalent moral-and spiritual-discourse that evolved with the advance of neo-liberal global capitalism. An ethos of "millennial capitalism" (Comaroff and Comaroff 2001), in conjunction with increasingly prominent right-wing Hindutva nationalism, has spurred notable shifts in values, concepts of the sacred, and notions of ideal human subjectivities-most especially female subject-positions. Millennial capitalism joins other fundamentalist forms in prioritizing efforts to control women's reproductive labor and economic opportunities.In part because the central myths of neo-liberal millennial capitalism work through institutional settings-such as development organizations and healthcare systems-their impact has often gone unscrutinized. This lack of attention poses a serious problem for advancing gender- and reproductive justice, since neo-liberalism relies on baked-in inequalities deriving in part from women's unpaid and low-paid labor-including their reproductive labor-as its "invisible infrastructure." These myths hinder genuine progress on SRHR concerns. I examine how this ideology has advanced through various facets including development programming and funding mechanisms for SRHR; moral and religious frameworks relating to sexuality and reproduction; the symbiosis of Hindutva and neo-liberalism; and changes in the healthcare system and in India's medical profession.I explored these facets in the specific nexus between feminist advocacy concerning safe abortion access, and the coexistent problem of sex selection. Organizations attempting to disentangle these oft-conflated concerns face numerous difficulties recently exacerbated by millennial capitalism. Among other impacts, this ideology has catalyzed support for a symbolic fetal "subjectivity," and encroached on the rights and subjectivity of girls and women.

Care is central to life, and yet is all too often undervalued, taken for granted, and hidden from view. This collection of fourteen substantive and highly innovative essays, along with its insightful introduction, seeks to explore the different dimensions of care that shape social, legal and political contexts. Much like the HBO hit Sex and the City, trendy dramas feature well-heeled young sophisticates enjoying consumer-oriented lifestyles while managing their unruly love lives. Integrating a political-economic analysis of television production with reception research, Lukács suggests that the trendy drama marked a shift in the Japanese television industry from offering story-driven entertainment to producing lifestyle-oriented programming. She interprets the new televisual preoccupation with consumer trends not as a sign of the medium’s downfall, but as a savvy strategy to appeal to viewers who increasingly demand entertainment that feels more personal than mass-produced fare. After all, what the producers of trendy dramas realized in the late 1980s was that taste and lifestyle were sources of identification that could be manipulated to satisfy mass and niche demands more easily than could conventional marketing criteria such as generation or gender. Lukács argues that by capitalizing on the semantic fluidity of the notion of lifestyle, commercial television networks were capable of uniting viewers into new affective alliances that, in turn, helped them bury anxieties over changing class relations in the wake of the prolonged economic recession.
