The direct simulation Monte Carlo method developed for the prediction of positive ion collection by a rocket-borne probe has to be extended to simulate negative ion collection. It is found that realistic probe potentials can produce a high stagnation-point flux of negative ions while completely rejecting positive ions. However, this flux of negative ions is strongly attenuated by collisions at finite Knudsen numbers. Additionally, the necessary theory has been developed so that direct simulation of nonequilibrium chemistry in the ionosphere can be performed. (Author).

A systematic parametric variation for the positive ion collection by a rocket-borne probe has been completed for the following parameters; speed ratio 3.10, non-dimensional front face potential -200, zero sidewall potential, Debye numbers from 0.01 to 1000, and Knudsen numbers from 0.007 to 1000. The effects of finite space charge on the vehicle are to lower the ion flux to the stagnation point. It is found that the ion flux follows a uniform trend for Knudsen numbers greater than 0.2, but becomes complicated for the near-continuum regime, e.g., Knudsen number equal to 0.007, which is discussed in detail. Investigation of vehicle angle of attack and internal degrees of freedom indicate that the effects on the ion flux are small. The formulation for the collection negative ions has been completed and preliminary results indicate that the electrons are described properly. (Author).

Monte Carlo calculations of ion collection by a rocket-borne mass spectrometer have been completed for the collisionless case for the following range of parameters: Debye number 0.01 to 1000, speed ratio 0.1 to 3.1 and nondimensional potential -10 to -200. Calculations made in the transition regime show that minimum altitude at which the free molecule flow assumption is valid is approximately 120 km. A calculation at 70 km corresponding to a Knudsen number 0.007 indicates that the flowfield can be characterized as near-continuum but one in which the rarefaction effects are still important. The study demonstrates that the Monte Carlo technique is an efficient method to determine ion collection over the complete range of the flight parameters: Knudsen number, Debye number, plate potential, and speed ratio.
