Book Description

Book Description
This essential guide clearly explains the American Institute for Steel Construction (AISC) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Specifications and Commentary, enabling readers to conform with and profit from the design aids and tables in the AISC Manuals of Steel Construction, Volumes I and II. It provides readers with valuable specification interpretations, analysis and design examples, and graphs providing ready-made solutions to complex code formulas. Special features of this practical volume include quick and economical beam selection tables, detailed truss design examples, and coefficients for shears, moments, and points of inflection. It contains a variety of numerical examples, along with discussions of material specifications. The design requirements included in the LRFD specifications are arranged in an accessible manner, making it easy to pinpoint the design of specific elements. This single-volume resource offers structural engineers essential material necessary for designing efficient structural steel buildings. Engineering students in related courses will find this book invaluable for understanding and becoming acclimated with the AISC and LRFD standard design practices.

Book Description
The design of many structures such as pressure vessels, aircrafts, bridge decks, dome roofs, and missiles is based on the theories of plates and shells. The degree of simplification needed to adopt the theories to the design of various structures depends on the type of structure and the re quired accuracy of the results. Hence, a water storage tank can be satis factorily designed using the membrane shell theory, which disregards all bending moments, whereas the design of a missile casing requires a more precise analysis in order to minimize weight and materials. Similarly, the design of a nozzle-to-cylinder junction in a nuclear reactor may require a sophisticated finite element analysis to prevent fatigue failure while the same junction in an air accumulator in a gas station is designed by simple equations that satisfy equilibrium conditions. Accordingly, this book is written for engineers interested in the theories of plates and shells and their proper application to various structures. The examples given throughout the book subsequent to derivation of various theories are intended to show the engineer the level of analysis required to achieve a safe design with a given degree of accuracy. The book covers three general areas. These are: bending of plates; membrane and bending theories of shells; and buckling of plates and shells. Bending of plates is discussed in five chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 cover rectangular plates with various boundary and loading conditions.

Book Description
This book covers the essentials of developments in the area of plate structures and presents them so that the readers can obtain a quick understanding and overview of the subject. Several theoretical models are employed for their analysis and design starting from the classical thin plate theory to alternatives obtained by incorporation of appropriate complicating effects or by using fundamentally different assumptions. The book includes pedagogical features like end-of-chapter exercises and worked examples to help students in self-learning. The book is extremely useful for the senior undergraduate and postgraduate students of aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering.
