Molly Ivins: Letters to The Nation
Author: Molly Ivins
Publisher: The Nation Co. LP
ISBN:
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 103
Book Description
Writing in her native “Texlish,” Molly Ivins planted herself squarely in the tradition of plain-spoken and earthy American humor, the big river that runs from Mark Twain straight through to Will Rogers, Ring Lardner and George Carlin. Between 1982 and 2007, Ivins contributed seventeen consistently sharp and funny articles to The Nation, starting with what might be described as her “Letters From Texas,” in which she discussed political developments in the Lone Star State, whose zany politics were full of exotic people dubbed “The Gibber,” “The Breck Girl” and “Governor Goodhair.” Despite their humor, however, Ivins’s pieces always delivered trenchant political commentary. And she could also write highly accomplished and fascinating cultural essays and book reviews (such as “Ezra Pound in East Texas,” included in this eBook).

Letters to Molly
Author: John Millington Synge
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674528345
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 380
Book Description
When John Millington Synge and Molly Allgood fell in love, he was thirty-five, she nineteen. Neither knew that he had Hodgkin's disease, of which he was to die in three years. Synge had already achieved recognition as a playwright--translations of two of his plays had been performed in Berlin and Prague--and he was codirector, with Yeats and Lady Gregory, of the Irish National Theatre Society. Molly had started her acting career the year before, in the newly opened Abbey Theatre, with a walk-on part in Synge's Well of the Saints. She had been promoted from crowd scenes to bit parts to lead roles in Riders to the Sea and The Shadow of the Glen. She was still only a member of the company, however, while Synge was a director, whose codirectors disapproved of fraternization. Synge and Molly also faced the disapproval of two widowed mothers. Barring an occasional holiday trip or company road tour, they could seldom be alone together, except on secret afternoon meetings for long walks in the country. Hence their hundreds of letters. Molly's letters do not survive; they apparently were destroyed when Synge died. But his letters convey her mercurial charm, her openness, her love of life, her impulsiveness, and her temper--as violent as his own. What they convey of him (when he is not reproving her or remonstrating with her, as he does in the early months of their relationship) is the love of nature, the poetic language, the bittersweet irony, the elemental quality of emotion, that we know from the plays. His concern for his craft is seen as he struggles with The Playboy. ("Parts of it are not structurally strong or good. I have been all this time trying to get over weak situations by strong writing, but now I find it won't do, and I am at my wit's end.") Synge was quite unperturbed by the violent outrage and near-riots the play provoked. ("Now we'll be talked about. We're an event in the history of the Irish stage," he wrote cheerily.) As his illness progresses, following operations in 1907 and 1908, there is great poignancy in the gradual abating of references to marriage plans and in the shift of salutation from "Dearest Changeling" to "My dearest child." After Synge's death his friends and biographers discreetly avoided mention of Molly, who under her stage name of Maire O'Neill became one of the leading actresses of the Irish theater and lived until 1952. His letters to her have not been published before, except for the few quoted in Greene and Stephens' 1959 biography. A primary source for the study of Synge and the Irish theater movement, the letters include poems inspired by Molly and extensive information about Abbey Theatre business. In addition to a biographical introduction, Ann Saddlemyer has included a map of the Wicklow and Dublin areas and numerous photographs of both Synge and Molly.

Molly Spotted Elk
Author: Bunny McBride
Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press
ISBN: 9780806129891
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 390
Book Description
This biography chronicles the extraordinary life of twentieth-century performing artist Molly Spotted Elk. Born in 1903 on the Penobscot reservation in Maine, Molly ventured into show business at an early age, performing vaudeville in New York, starring in the classic docudrama The Silent Enemy, then dancing for royalty and mingling with the literary elite in Europe. In Paris she found an audience more appreciative of authentic Native dance than in the United States. There she married a French journalist, but she was forced to leave him and flee France with her daughter during the German occupation of 1940. Using extensive diaries in conjunction with letters, interviews, and other sources, Bunny McBride reconstructs Molly’s story and sheds light on the pressure she and her peers endured in having to act out white stereotypes of the "Indian."

First and Wildest
Author: Elizabeth Hightower Allen
Publisher: Torrey House Press
ISBN: 1948814560
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 163
Book Description
"The Gila Wilderness is both a landmark in conservation history and a living, evolving place. First and Wildest is an elegant, impassioned, and timely tribute to its remarkable past and present.” —MICHELLE NIJHUIS In the summer of 1922, Aldo Leopold traveled on horseback up into the headwaters of New Mexico's Gila River and proposed to his bosses at the Forest Service that 500,000 acres of that rough country be set aside as roadless wilderness. Thus was born America's first—the world's first—designated wilderness. A century later, writer–activists, including Indigenous voices, come together to celebrate this vast, rugged landscape, the Yellowstone of the Southwest. Contributors include Michael P. Berman, Philip Connors, Martha Schumann Cooper, Beto O'Rourke, Martin Heinrich, Pam Houston, Priyanka Kumar, Laura Paskus, Sharman Apt Russell, Jakob Sedig, Leeanna T. Torres, and JJ Amaworo Wilson. ELIZABETH HIGHTOWER ALLEN is a contributing editor at Outside magazine, where she spent twenty–plus years editing award–winning features and writing columns and book reviews. A transplanted southerner turned westerner, she lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she edits books and articles about public lands, memoir, and adventure, and serves on the advisory board to Writers on the Range. She and her husband and daughter spend as much time as they can exploring the rivers and mountains of the West—while also making it back to Tennessee fairly frequently for ham biscuits. Her mind is blown by the rugged vastness of the Gila.

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Description
It started as a suggestion from our grief group leader to start journaling. It was formed when I joined a small writing group in Beverlys living room and we got the assignment to write Who are you now? and then to write Who were you before that? and Who were you......... and fi fteen before thats later I had the outline of this book. Th e telling became compelling as I worked over the four years and chronicled my story. I tell it because it affi rms for me who I am and maybe later generations will want to know something of where they came from. In the beginning my grandparents came into Oklahoma when it was Indian Territory and participated in the journey to statehood. Th e changes that took place between the time my mother was born in 1898 and when she died one hundred and fi ve years later are hard to imagine. She lived in three centuries and this story lives in these three centuries. Being a mother and enjoying two sons that are a joy to me to this day is a rich part of my life story and this part of my telling is a joy to remember. Th e love of two gifted men blessed my tale and fi lls me with appreciation for both of them. Th e three children from the second marriage are an amazing gift. What it meant to be a woman, wife and mother changed and morphed as I grew from childhood to an eighty- eight year old woman and I had the opportunity to work with women of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as we began to struggle with issues that impacted our homes, schools, churches and political institutions. Retirement bloomed into ten great years exploring the United States and Canada and also helping the fi ve children that now form my family. Many hours of helping to redo, remodel and restore helped build relationships and gave me many special memories. Th is story of I am Jo/Jo am I is one womans story of life, love, learning and living toward the end. I am still doing it!
