Book Description
Almost since the first appearance of Plantagenet Palliser in the novels of Anthony Trollope, he has been accompanied by his effervescent wife, Lady Glencora. As the final installment of the Palliser series begins, she has been cruelly taken from him by a fatal illness, just at the moment when their three children are making their way in the world—and finding marriage partners of their own. But the younger generation does not seem to share the Duke’s values. The loves of both his eldest son and his only daughter in particular trouble him deeply, bringing into conflict his intellectual commitments and his emotional attachments. As with Phineas Finn, there are three notable female characters to add to Trollope’s roster of impressive women: Lady Mabel Grex, the American Isabel Boncassen, and the youngest of the Duke’s children, Lady Mary. The last in particular serves as a foil to the disappointments of Lady Laura Standish seen in the previous novels, and explores again the might-have-beens of choices gone awry. In other ways, too, The Duke’s Children gathers up themes from earlier Palliser novels: forgiveness, constancy, the maturing of youth, the constraints of nature, the disruptions of chance. Importantly, too, it displays complexities of political commitments from the vantage point of a younger generation coming of age. All this seems to have been deliberate. The manuscript for the novel shows Trollope made cuts—very rare in his corpus—of about 65,000 words at the request of the publisher. These often develop more explicitly the back-references to the earlier novels. As the series concludes, Trollope finally gives vent to his own bitter experience of parliamentary elections: “Parliamentary canvassing is not a pleasant occupation. Perhaps nothing more disagreeable, more squalid, more revolting to the senses, more opposed to personal dignity, can be conceived.” This account is often to taken to arise out of Trollope’s own experience of campaigning in Beverly where he stood as a Liberal candidate in east Yorkshire. Despite Trollope’s disgust at the process, and disappointment at the outcome, The Duke’s Children ends with the Duke of Omnium returning to office, and an optimistic outlook for the political careers of the next generation.

Book Description
'shades of Sarah Waters...irresistible' - The Guardian 'I would like to make myself the heroine of this story - an innocent victim led astray. But alas sir, I would be lying...' London, 1756: In Newgate prison, Tully Truegood awaits trial. Her fate hanging in the balance, she tells her life-story. It's a tale that takes her from skivvy in the back streets of London, to conjuror's assistant, to celebrated courtesan at her stepmother's Fairy House, the notorious house of ill-repute where decadent excess is a must... Tully was once the talk of the town. Now, with the best seats at Newgate already sold in anticipation of her execution, her only chance of survival is to get her story to the one person who can help her avoid the gallows. She is Tully Truegood. Orphan, whore, magician's apprentice. Murderer? A compelling mix of bawdy romp and magical realism.' -Sarra Manning, Red magazine

Available for the first time since its original publication more than fifty years ago, Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm is a charming collection whose hilarious title story features Christmas dinner with the Starkadders before Flora's arrival. With Adam playing Santa while draped in Mrs. Starkadders's shawls, the family shares their traditional "Christmas pudding"-a mélange containing random objects of doom foretelling the coming year: a coffin nail for death, a bad sixpence for financial ruin, and a menthol cone to indicate that the lucky recipient will go "blind wi' headache." These lively tales will delight anyone who loves Stella Gibbons and her signature wit.

Book Description
Long-listed for the 2018 Man Booker Prize Short-listed for the 2018 Gordon Burn Prize Short-listed for the 2018 Goldsmiths Prize Inspired by the real-life murder of a British army soldier by religious fanatics, Guy Gunaratne’s In Our Mad and Furious City is a snapshot of the diverse, frenzied edges of modern-day London. A crackling debut from a vital new voice, it pulses with the frantic energy of the city’s homegrown grime music and is animated by the youthful rage of a dispossessed, overlooked, and often misrepresented generation. While Selvon, Ardan, and Yusuf organize their lives around soccer, girls, and grime, Caroline and Nelson struggle to overcome pasts that haunt them. Each voice is uniquely insightful, impassioned, and unforgettable, and when stitched together, they trace a brutal and vibrant tapestry of today’s London. In a forty-eight-hour surge of extremism and violence, their lives are inexorably drawn together in the lead-up to an explosive, tragic climax. In Our Mad and Furious City documents the stark disparities and bubbling fury coursing beneath the prosperous surface of a city uniquely on the brink. Written in the distinctive vernaculars of contemporary London, the novel challenges the ways in which we coexist now—and, more important, the ways in which we often fail to do so.

Book Description
"Aspiring novelist Molly MacGregor laments she will never be like the literary heroines she reads about. Not only does she live in what she thinks the most unromantic region in the world, she is named after one of literature's least romantic heroines, Moll Flanders. Set partly at a shoe store at the world's largest shopping mall in Edmonton where Molly works and partly in an English department where she is a student, Molly of the Mall: Literary Lass and Purveyor of Fine Footwear is a story about love and a story about place. This novel explores Molly's love for the written word, love for the wrong men and the right one, and finally, her hard-won love for her city."--
