Book Description
Molecular and Cellular Enzymology addresses not only experienced enzymologists but also students, teachers and academic and industrial researchers who are confronted with enzymological problems during their fundamental or applied research. In this field there is an urgent need for training in order to meet the requirements of both research and industrial endeavours. This book consists of several levels. Practical aspects and elementary explanations are given for the benefit of non-specialists’ and students’ understanding. In order to facilitate the task of students, two typographies have been adopted. The main text corresponds to basic knowledge, whereas text in a smaller font provides more specialised information. Specialists will also find topics more deeply expounded with the principal bibliographic references cited. The bibliography, however, is not exhaustive; the choice includes general books and review articles as well as some specialised articles. In this book, for the first time, the different molecular and cellular aspects of enzymology are presented together. Until now, there has been no book available in which these different aspects are treated in the same volume. In addition, besides the theoretical developments, this book provides a wealth of practical information for experimentalists.

Book Description
Proteins constitute the working-class molecules of the cell. Hence, understanding the way they act is a prerequisite for understanding how a cell functions and how life evolves. Aspects such as the protein-ligand relationship, recognition, protein evolution by point mutation, enzyme-substrate interactions, behaviour of an enzyme in a living cell, control and dynamics of enzyme networks as well as the physico-chemical background of enzyme actions and multi-enzyme complexes are comprehensively treated in this volume.

Advances in Enzymology and Related Areas of Molecular Biology is a seminal series in the field of biochemistry, offering researchers access to authoritative reviews of the latest discoveries in all areas of enzymology and molecular biology. These landmark volumes date back to 1941, providing an unrivaled view of the historical development of enzymology. The series offers researchers the latest understanding of enzymes, their mechanisms, reactions and evolution, roles in complex biological processes, and their applications in both the laboratory and industry. Each volume in the series features contributions from leading pioneers and investigators in the field from around the world. All articles are carefully edited to ensure thoroughness, quality, and readability. Volume 76 focuses on the most recent advances in the field of practical preparative enzymology. Enzymes have long been recognized and utilized for the preparation of specialty chemicals, and enzymatic resolution and desymmetrization are mainstays of the fine chemical industry. Today, some of the most intriguing enzymatic synthetic approaches involve the construction of complex pathways within cells to prepare molecules much more complex than those that can be reasonably developed in cell-free applications; this volume considers some of those processes. Koffas and coworkers provide an overview of the construction of complex biosynthetic pathways for the preparation of a variety of both fine and commodity chemicals, including biofuels. The development of highly efficient pathways involves a combination of rational design and, increasingly, evolutionary approaches, and Schmidt-Dannert reviews the use of evolutionary strategies in synthetic biology. Glycosylation of myriad biologically active species impacts both in vivo activity and ADME behavior. The addition of carbohydrate moieties to complex organic molecules represents a daunting synthetic challenge, and Williams and Thorson review the various strategies for enzymatic glycosylation of complex natural products. Finally, Pimkin and Markham review the structure, activity, and mechanism of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase, a central enzyme of purine biosynthesis. With its wide range of topics and long historical pedigree, Advances in Enzymology and Related Areas of Molecular Biology can be used not only by students and researchers in molecular biology, biochemistry, and enzymology, but also by any scientist interested in the discovery of an enzyme, its properties, and its applications.

Book Description
Since the publication of the successful and popular second edition of Fundamentals of Enzymology in 1989, a large increase in the knowledge of several aspects of enzymology has occurred -- particularly in the areas of structural characterization of enzymes and bioinformatics. This new edition places appropriate emphasis on the new knowledge while consolidating the strengths of the previous editions. As before, this volume gives a thorough overview of the field that includes: enzyme purification and characterization; enzyme structure (including information on World Wide Web sites); enzyme kinetics; the mechanisms and control of enzyme action; enzyme folding; how enzymes act in vivo; enzyme synthesis and degradation; and clinical and industrial applications of enzymology. Furthermore, the integration of these themes is stressed throughout the book, making it useful for advanced undergraduates in biochemistry and molecular biology.
