Book Description
Phycoerythrin, pigment-protein complex in photosynthetic organisms, plays a role in photosynthesis in transferring an energy abosrbed by itself to chlorophyll. Previous studies in this laboratory showed that the longest absorption band at 565 millimicrons responsible for fluorescence originates from the interaction between the pigment and SH-group of the protein in phycoerythrin. During the course of investigation on the effect of SH-blocking agent on energy transfer, it was found that modified phycoerythrin is released from cells treated with PCMB. This modified phycoerythrin possesses a single absorption band at 545 millimicrons, while native phycoerythrin shows three absorption bands at 500, 545, and 565 millimicrons. In the glutathione-treated modified phycoerythrin, the highly fluorescent 565 millimicrons chromophore was partially regenerated. This investigation indicates that native phycoerythrin is composed of two units and that modified phycoerythrin is one of them separated from the other containing the 500 millimicrons chromophore only. On the Impedance Method for Measuring High Electron Density and Electron Collision Frequency in a Gaseous Plasma Column
Author: Denis M. Coffey
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electron distribution
Languages : en
Pages : 38
Book Description
An analysis of a microwave impedance method for measuring electron density and effective electron collision frequency in a plasma column is reviewed. It is evident from laboratory observations that surface polarization effects may be present in the impedance method. Such a consideration alters the form of the usual expression for the complex dielectric constant of an ionized gas. (Author).

Production of H− (1s2) by Hydrogen Atom Collisions
Author: R. A. Mapleton
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Collisional excitation
Languages : en
Pages : 16
Book Description
The prior and post Born matrix elements are used to calculate the cross sections for H( - )(1s2) production in hydrogen atom collisions. In contrast to the original version of this work done by Mapleton in 1960, the plane wave approximation to the Coulomb function is partially corrected. The same H( - ) wave functions are used, and the post cross sections are substantially unaltered. Cross sections calculated with the improved H( - ) wave function as compared with the other H( - ) wave functions are from twenty to thirty-five per cent larger for the prior case and twenty to thirty per cent larger for the post case. The post-prior discrepancy, expressed as a ratio, varies between 0.001 and 0.33. (Author).

Experimental Study of Zone Refining of the Binary System Triphenyl Antimony-benzoic Acid
Author: Marvin S. Brooks
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Antimony
Languages : en
Pages : 94
Book Description
An experimental study on the zone refining of the binary system triphenyl antimony-benzoic acid is described. The isotope Sb124, which is a strong gamma emitter, was employed as a tracer; this allowed a rapid in situ nondestructive analysis, closely spaced experimental points, and the opportunity to study distribution as a function of varying experimental conditions. With the aid of computers (IBM 7090 and IBM 7044) apparent k's were calculated and the experimental data compared with those predicted from various mathematical models. (Author).

On the Resolving Power of Ground Mapping Radar Antennas
Author: J. F. McIlvenna
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerial photography
Languages : en
Pages : 66
Book Description
The mapping of extended, cultural ground targets by an airborne radar is examined using communication theory concepts including those of the antenna transfer function and the target spatial frequency spectrum. Use of the set of transfer functions that correspond to Taylor aperture distributions and specification of the targets directly in terms of their spatial frequency spectra, permits one to examine the antenna images for quality and resolution. The results obtained indicate that resolution for a class of ground targets can be much better than is predicted by the two-point Rayleigh resolution criterion. It is also true that there can be situations in which the shape of the antenna images are quite independent of the radiation pattern. Several types of spatial noise were also included in the input spectrum to investigate noise effects on image quality and resolution. (Author).

Electromagnetic Properties of a Plasma-covered Antenna
Author: Daniel J. Jacavanco
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Antennas, Horn
Languages : en
Pages : 22
Book Description
Antenna patterns (E-plane) of an X-band horn mounted in a ground plane and covered by a plasma slab were measured. A pulsed plasma was produced by capacitor discharge in a rectangular pyrex container of 6 in. x 2 in. x 24 in. i.d. Microwave interferometer measurements of the electron density were made at 9 and 35 Gc. Antenna patterns are presented which show a sharp decrease in radiated power at certain angles corresponding to the 'optics critical angle'. Good agreement is obtained for the movement of the optics critical angle with plasma density. (Author).
