Coal Combustion and Gasification
Author: L.Douglas Smoot
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1475797214
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 450
Book Description
The use of coal is required to help satisfy the world's energy needs. Yet coal is a difficult fossil fuel to consume efficiently and cleanly. We believe that its clean and efficient use can be increased through improved technology based on a thorough understanding of fundamental physical and chemical processes that occur during consumption. The principal objective of this book is to provide a current summary of this technology. The past technology for describing and analyzing coal furnaces and combus tors has relied largely on empirical inputs for the complex flow and chemical reactions that occur while more formally treating the heat-transfer effects. GrOWing concern over control of combustion-generated air pollutants revealed a lack of understanding of the relevant fundamental physical and chemical mechanisms. Recent technical advances in computer speed and storage capacity, and in numerical prediction of recirculating turbulent flows, two-phase flows, and flows with chemical reaction have opened new opportunities for describing and modeling such complex combustion systems in greater detail. We believe that most of the requisite component models to permit a more fundamental description of coal combustion processes are available. At the same time there is worldwide interest in the use of coal, and progress in modeling of coal reaction processes has been steady.

Atmospheric Chemiluminescence
Author: S. M. Miller
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Chemiluminescence
Languages : en
Pages : 178
Book Description
During the last four years, many experiments have been performed in the COCHISE facility. Each of these experiments has measured a fundamental chemical quantity such as a radiative branching ratio, a quenching rate coefficient or a product vibrational energy distribution. These measurements are then provided for incorporation into the various atmospheric radiation codes such as NORSE, ARC, and AARC, where they provide a solid experimental footing for modeling the complex chemical system of the upper atmosphere.

2.7/4.3 Micron CO2 Branching Ratio Measurement
Author: Steven M. Miller
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Atmosphere, Upper
Languages : en
Pages : 32
Book Description
Two rocket infrared measurement programs during the 1970 's (ICe CAP and SPIRE) measured significant amounts of radiation in the upper atmosphere at 2.7 microns. Several papers have been published which attribute this radiation at 2.7 microns to the hot bands of Carbon dioxide. To determine the contribution of 2.7 microns radiation from CO2 each of these analyses rely on a simple theoretical calculation of the CO2 branching ratio between 2.7 microns and 4.3 microns. The radiative branching from the CO2(021) combination vibrational energy state to the CO2 (020) and CO2 (000) states is measured using both laser induced fluorescence excitation and spectrally resolved fluorescence experiments. These measurements bound the branching ratio (C02(021) CO2 (020)/CO2(O21) CO2 (000)) between 13 and 16.

Quality Technology Handbook
Author: R S Sharpe
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 148316408X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 492
Book Description
Quality Technology Handbook, Fourth Edition offers a wide discussion on technology and its related subtopics. After giving some information on its background, content, and authors, the book then informs the readers about the quality problem check-list and enumerates the questions one has to ask to ensure that a problem will be solved. This part is followed by a discussion on non-destructive testing (NDT) and the several committees formed for it, among which are the British National Committee and the Harwell NDT Center. The book also includes information on two organizations that are closely related to the topic, the Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) and The Welding Institute (TWI). A directory of international organizations related to quality assurance and non-destructive testing is provided in the latter part of the text. The book serves as valuable reference to undergraduates or postgraduates of courses that are related to science and technology.
