Book Description
Introduction to Modeling and Simulation An essential introduction to engineering system modeling and simulation from a well-trusted source in engineering and education This new introductory-level textbook provides thirteen self-contained chapters, each covering an important topic in engineering systems modeling and simulation. The importance of such a topic cannot be overstated; modeling and simulation will only increase in importance in the future as computational resources improve and become more powerful and accessible, and as systems become more complex. This resource is a wonderful mix of practical examples, theoretical concepts, and experimental sessions that ensure a well-rounded education on the topic. The topics covered in Introduction to Modeling and Simulation are timeless fundamentals that provide the necessary background for further and more advanced study of one or more of the topics. The text includes topics such as linear and nonlinear dynamical systems, continuous-time and discrete-time systems, stability theory, numerical methods for solution of ODEs, PDE models, feedback systems, optimization, regression and more. Each chapter provides an introduction to the topic to familiarize students with the core ideas before delving deeper. The numerous tools and examples help ensure students engage in active learning, acquiring a range of tools for analyzing systems and gaining experience in numerical computation and simulation systems, from an author prized for both his writing and his teaching over the course of his over-40-year career. Introduction to Modeling and Simulation readers will also find: Numerous examples, tools, and programming tips to help clarify points made throughout the textbook, with end-of-chapter problems to further emphasize the material As systems become more complex, a chapter devoted to complex networks including small-world and scale-free networks – a unique advancement for textbooks within modeling and simulation A complementary website that hosts a complete set of lecture slides, a solution manual for end-of-chapter problems, MATLAB files, and case-study exercises Introduction to Modeling and Simulation is aimed at undergraduate and first-year graduate engineering students studying systems, in diverse avenues within the field: electrical, mechanical, mathematics, aerospace, bioengineering, physics, and civil and environmental engineering. It may also be of interest to those in mathematical modeling courses, as it provides in-depth material on MATLAB simulation and contains appendices with brief reviews of linear algebra, real analysis, and probability theory.

Book Description
Furthering the aim of reducing human exposure to hazardous environments, this monograph presents a detailed study of the modeling and control of vehicle-manipulator systems. The text shows how complex interactions can be performed at remote locations using systems that combine the manipulability of robotic manipulators with the ability of mobile robots to locomote over large areas. The first part studies the kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies and standard robotic manipulators and can be used as an introduction to robotics focussing on robust mathematical modeling. The monograph then moves on to study vehicle-manipulator systems in great detail with emphasis on combining two different configuration spaces in a mathematically sound way. Robustness of these systems is extremely important and Modeling and Control of Vehicle-manipulator Systems effectively represents the dynamic equations using a mathematically robust framework. Several tools from Lie theory and differential geometry are used to obtain globally valid representations of the dynamic equations of vehicle-manipulator systems. The specific characteristics of several different types of vehicle-manipulator systems are included and the various application areas of these systems are discussed in detail. For underwater robots buoyancy and gravity, drag forces, added mass properties, and ocean currents are considered. For space robotics the effects of free fall environments and the strong dynamic coupling between the spacecraft and the manipulator are discussed. For wheeled robots wheel kinematics and non-holonomic motion is treated, and finally the inertial forces are included for robots mounted on a forced moving base. Modeling and Control of Vehicle-manipulator Systems will be of interest to researchers and engineers studying and working on many applications of robotics: underwater, space, personal assistance, and mobile manipulation in general, all of which have similarities in the equations required for modeling and control.

Book Description
Systems engineering is the design of a complex interconnection of many elements (a system) to maximize a specific measure of system performance. It consists of two parts: modeling, in which each element of the system and its performance criteria are described; and optimization in which adjustable elements are tailored to allow peak performance. Systems engineering is applied to vast numbers of problems in industry and the military. An example of systems engineering at work is the control of the timing of thousands of city traffic lights to maximize traffic flow. The complex and intricate field of electronics and computers is perfectly suited for systems engineering analysis and in turn, advances in communications and computer technology have made more advanced systems engineering problems solvable. Thus, the two areas fed off of one another. This book is a basic introduction to the use of models and methods in the engineering design of systems. It is aimed at students as well as practicing engineers. The concept of the "systems of systems" is discussed extensively, after a critical comparison of the different definitions and a range of various practical illustrations. It also provides key answers as to what a system of systems is and how its complexity can be mastered.
