Recent technological advances in wireless communication and the pervasiveness of various wireless communication devices have offered novel and promising solutions to enable vehicles to communicate with each other, establishing a decentralized communication system. An emerging solution in this area is the Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), in which vehicles cooperate in receiving and delivering messages to each other. VANETs can provide a viable alternative in situations where existing infrastructure communication systems become overloaded, fail (due for instance to natural disaster), or inconvenient to use. Nevertheless, the success of VANETs revolves around a number of key elements, an important one of which is the way messages are routed between sources and destinations. Without an effective message routing strategy VANETs' success will continue to be limited. In order for messages to be routed to a destination effectively, the location of the destination must be determined. Since vehicles move in relatively fast and in a random manner, determining the location (hence the optimal message routing path) of (to) the destination vehicle constitutes a major challenge. Recent approaches for tackling this challenge have resulted in a number of Location Service Management Protocols. Though these protocols have demonstrated good potential, they still suffer from a number of impediments, including, signaling volume (particularly in large scale VANETs), inability to deal with network voids and inability to leverage locality for communication between the network nodes. In this thesis, a Region-based Location Service Management Protocol (RLSMP) is proposed. The protocol is a self-organizing framework that uses message aggregation and geographical clustering to minimize the volume of signalling overhead. To the best of my knowledge, RLSMP is the first protocol that uses message aggregation in both updating and querying, and as such it promises scalability, locality awareness, and fault tolerance. Location service management further addresses the issue of routing location updating and querying messages. Updating and querying messages should be exchanged between the network nodes and the location servers with minimum delay. This necessity introduces a persuasive need to support Quality of Service (QoS) routing in VANETs. To mitigate the QoS routing challenge in VANETs, the thesis proposes an Adaptive Message Routing (AMR) protocol that utilizes the network's local topology information in order to find the route with minimum end-to-end delay, while maintaining the required thresholds for connectivity probability and hop count. The QoS routing problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem for which a genetic algorithm is proposed. The thesis presents experiments to validate the proposed protocol and test its performance under various network conditions.

VANETs, one of the most significant trends in ad-hoc networking, has much to gain from improved content delivery and one of the leading contenders for mobile networks is the Information-Centric networking approach. Its peculiarities define the Vehicular Environment requires specialized solutions, tailored for highly mobile environments. The main contribution of this thesis is the introduction of a novel architecture and components. We perform extensively discuss Information-Centric Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks. Additionally, we perform an in-depth analysis of bus-based transit systems into VANETs not only as participating members but as service providers and official agents including roles and potential challenges. We perform statistical analysis and analyze world data to denote the intrinsic potential of public transit systems. From the discussions presented, we introduce a novel service-based system architecture for Information-Centric Networking named SEVeN. The proposed model is designed to enable service exchange and service management in highly competitive vehicular ad-hoc networks. The proposed SEVeN architecture includes the introduction of a novel purpose-defined naming policy and service sub-layer as well as a service prioritization policy named LBD. We also discuss the current state of ICN caching in VANET, existing issues faced by vehicular networks and potential approaches based on intermediate cache coordination that can be taken to mitigate existing shortcommings. We perform a series of simulations and analyze the efficiency of popular caching in various network configurations to denote current shortcomings. From this discussion, we propose a cache content insertion policies, UG-Cache and MG-Cache, for ICN-VANETs. In these cache policies, cache insertion decisions are made based on recommendations from content sender dependent on request frequency and cache distance. We also introduce a caching policy based on collaborative observation of locality in request frequency, designed to allow vehicles to preemptively distribute and store in a reserved portion of the cache based on the cooperative observation of requests with provider-based location correlation. All novel elements proposed by this thesis are discussed, described, evaluated within the chapters of this thesis.

The new wireless network technologies introduced in the fifth generation of cellular networks (5G) have enabled the development of various classes of mobile applications. This thesis investigates how these emerging mobile use-cases can make the most of the state-of-the-art wireless and computing technologies through effective collaborative network management and operations strategies. We study two general classes of services: (1) collaborative traffic relaying in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), aiming at providing highly available, fair and reliable connectivity/throughput to the network users; and (2) collaborative real-time services, aimed at providing devices with low-latency and high availability/reliability connectivity. In the first part of this thesis, we study VANETs and propose a novel vehicle connectivity framework wherein vehicles within communication range of each other form vehicle clusters, allowing them to opportunistically route traffic from/to each other. With the formation of these logical entities, vehicles can be viewed as mobile relay nodes, and have the potential to substantially improve the coverage and per-user throughput of the vehicular network. In this setting, we begin by presenting an analytical framework to study the performance gains enabled by this network architecture on a single road, and we show that vehicle clustering leads to considerable benefits including reduced throughput variability and improved coverage. We then look at larger-scale cellular networks and leverage results from the stochastic geometry literature to show that the proposed opportunistic vehicle clustering and relaying scheme has the potential to improve the throughput for both vehicles and non-vehicle-bound users by more than an order of magnitude through opportunistic relaying and cell load-balancing. Finally, we study wireless resource allocation mechanisms leading to improvements in shared-rate fairness among the network users. In the second part of this thesis, we study the operation of networks supporting real-time services, with a focus on devising efficient and timely information sharing mechanisms among the interconnected entities. We first examine how joint management of wireless communication and cloud/edge-computing resources can improve the timeliness of the information shared over the network, while reducing network resource provisioning costs. We investigate tradeoffs associated with status-update rate adaptation and service placement in the Cloud-to-Thing continuum for devices running real-time applications, and develop associated algorithms aiming at controlling the network congestion and improving the service availability. We argue that sending more information might be detrimental to its quality, and that various application-specific properties influence the service placement decision in the Cloud-to-Thing continuum. We then examine the performance of real-time multi-user services via the specific example of Multiplayer Cloud Gaming (MCG), and exhibit how joint rate adaptation is key to controlling congestion and providing a high quality of service in spite of spatio-temporal variations in the network delays particularly impacting massive multi-user services. Finally, we give particular attention to timely information sharing in collaborative-sensing vehicular networks. We introduce a communication-efficient information-sharing mechanism enabling vehicles to benefit from each other’s sensing capability in real-time via a centralized node (e.g., edge compute node, a cellular base station, or a road side unit).
