This volume contains the majority of the papers presented at the 5th Inter national Workshop on Model-Oriented Data Analysis held in June 1998. This series started in March 1987 with a meeting on the Wartburg, Eisenach (Germany). The next three meetings were in 1990 (St Kyrik monastery, Bulgaria), 1992 (Petrodvorets, StPetersburg, Russia) and 1995 (Spetses, Greece). The main purpose of these workshops was to bring together lead ing scientists from 'Eastern' and 'Western' Europe for the exchange of ideas in theoretical and applied statistics, with special emphasis on experimen tal design. Now that the separation between East and West has become less rigid, this dialogue has, in principle, become much easier. However, providing opportunities for this dialogue is as vital as ever. MODA meetings are known for their friendly atmosphere, leading to fruitful discussions and collaboration, especially between young and senior scien tists. Indeed, many long term collaborations were initiated during these events. This intellectually stimulating atmosphere is achieved by limiting the number of participants to around eighty, by the choice of location so that participants can live as a community, and, of course, through the care ful selection of scientific direction made by the Programme Committee.

The present book is devoted to studying optimal experimental designs for a wide class of linear and nonlinear regression models. This class includes polynomial, trigonometrical, rational, and exponential models as well as many particular models used in ecology and microbiology. As the criteria of optimality, the well known D-, E-, and c-criteria are implemented. The main idea of the book is to study the dependence of optimal - signs on values of unknown parameters and on the bounds of the design interval. Such a study can be performed on the base of the Implicit Fu- tion Theorem, the classical result of functional analysis. The idea was ?rst introduced in the author’s paper (Melas, 1978) for nonlinear in parameters exponential models. Recently, it was developed for other models in a n- ber of works (Melas (1995, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005), Dette, Melas (2002, 2003), Dette, Melas, Pepelyshev (2002, 2003, 2004b), and Dette, Melas, Biederman (2002)). Thepurposeofthepresentbookistobringtogethertheresultsobtained and to develop further underlying concepts and tools. The approach, m- tioned above, will be called the functional approach. Its brief description can be found in the Introduction. The book contains eight chapters. The subject of this book is the reasoning under uncertainty based on sta tistical evidence, where the word reasoning is taken to mean searching for arguments in favor or against particular hypotheses of interest. The kind of reasoning we are using is composed of two aspects. The first one is inspired from classical reasoning in formal logic, where deductions are made from a knowledge base of observed facts and formulas representing the domain spe cific knowledge. In this book, the facts are the statistical observations and the general knowledge is represented by an instance of a special kind of sta tistical models called functional models. The second aspect deals with the uncertainty under which the formal reasoning takes place. For this aspect, the theory of hints [27] is the appropriate tool. Basically, we assume that some uncertain perturbation takes a specific value and then logically eval uate the consequences of this assumption. The original uncertainty about the perturbation is then transferred to the consequences of the assumption. This kind of reasoning is called assumption-based reasoning. Before going into more details about the content of this book, it might be interesting to look briefly at the roots and origins of assumption-based reasoning in the statistical context. In 1930, R. A. Fisher [17] defined the notion of fiducial distribution as the result of a new form of argument, as opposed to the result of the older Bayesian argument.
