This second sub-collection, called The Middle Fifty, contains fifty suttas and is divided into five chapters: the Chapter on Family Heads, the Chapter on Bhikkhus, the Chapter on Ascetics, the Chapter on Kings and the Chapter on Brahmins. Continuing to complete the early autobiography are the suttas MN 85 With Prince Bodhi and MN 100 With Saṅgārava. In all there are five suttas that center and give historical context to the Buddha. The insistent repetition indicates their importance. On the spurious side, the suttas MN 91 and MN 92 stand out, in which the Buddha appears determined to show his penis with phimosis and his very long tongue with which he could clean his ears. All in order to affirm that he supposedly had the legendary 32 marks of the great man, a myth that apparently goes back to Gilgamesh. MN 95 insists on it again. Also surprising in MN 84 Conversation at Madhurā and MN 94 with Ghoṭamukha, the insistence on taking as Master an extinct Buddha in a pair of extemporaneous suttas starring strangers where the plot happens at an indeterminate time after the Buddha's parinibbāna.

Now in widespread use, generalized additive models (GAMs) have evolved into a standard statistical methodology of considerable flexibility. While Hastie and Tibshirani's outstanding 1990 research monograph on GAMs is largely responsible for this, there has been a long-standing need for an accessible introductory treatment of the subject that also emphasizes recent penalized regression spline approaches to GAMs and the mixed model extensions of these models. Generalized Additive Models: An Introduction with R imparts a thorough understanding of the theory and practical applications of GAMs and related advanced models, enabling informed use of these very flexible tools. The author bases his approach on a framework of penalized regression splines, and builds a well-grounded foundation through motivating chapters on linear and generalized linear models. The International Space Station is a closed and complex environment, so some contamination of its internal atmosphere and water system is expected. To protect space crews from contaminants in potable and hygiene water, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) requested that the National Research Council (NRC) provide guidance on how to develop water exposure guidelines and review NASA's development of the exposure guidelines for specific chemicals. NASA selects water contaminants for which spacecraft water exposure guidelines (SWEGs) will be established; this involves identifying toxicity effects relevant to astronauts and calculating exposure concentrations on the basis of those end points. SWEGs are established for exposures of 1, 10, 100, and 1,000 days. This report is the second volume in the series, Spacecraft Water Exposure Guidelines for Selected Chemicals. SWEG reports for acetone, alkylamines, ammonia, barium, cadmium, caprolactam, formate, formaldehyde, manganese, total organic carbon, and zinc are included in this report. The committee concludes that the SWEGs developed for these chemicals are scientifically valid based on the data reviewed by NASA and are consistent with the NRC (2000) report, Methods for Developing Spacecraft Water Exposure Guidelines. SWEG reports for additional chemicals will be presented in a subsequent volume.
