Book Description
John Brown and Elizabeth McCrary grew up in Laurens County, South Carolina. They married in 1807, then moved to Indiana. They later returned to the South, and settled in Lawrence County, Alabama. After Elizabeth's death, John Brown (who was an uncle of General Ambrose Burnside) moved to Warren County, Illinois, where he remarried, and spent the rest of his life. John and Elizabeth's descendants included doctors and lawyers, farmers and ranchers, soldiers, bankers, scientists, and engineers. Many bore other surnames-among them Dobbins, Cogdell, Wilson, Dandridge, Otwell, Davidson, and Glenn. They were a varied and mobile family, whose lives were intertwined with many major events of American history-the Gold Rush, the Civil War, the westward movement of the American population, and the nation's transformation from an agrarian and rural to a more industrialized and urban society. This book makes use of a variety of sources, including previously unpublished correspondence, to tell their story.

Book Description
Obediah Prichard (b.ca. 1755), grandson of Obediah and Margaret Prichard, was probably the father of Joshua Prichard Sr. (1780/1782-1863). If so, Obediah moved from Pennsylvania or Maryland to South Carolina, where Joshua Sr. was born. Joshua Prichard Sr. married Milley Tippen about 1804, moved from South Carolina to Gwinnett County, Georgia by 1820, and by 1840 moved to Cobb County, Georgia. Descendants (chiefly spelling the surname Pritchard) and relatives lived in South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, California and elsewhere.

Book Description
The immigrant ancestor of this family, Thomas Atkinson (ca. 1725-1784), died in Washington Co., Pa. The earliest document shows him living in March 1767 as a tenant in possession of land in Gunpowder Manor, Baltimore Co., Md. He left Baltimore County and settled in 1773 on Wheeling Creek (then Ohio Co., Va.), which became Washington Co., Pa. in 1781. He had nine children. The oldest child was possibly born in Ireland, the next at sea and the rest in Baltimore Co., Maryland. Descendants live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky and elsewhere. Includes other immigrant ancestors, who came from England and Germany settling in Virginia, Missouri and elsewhere in the early 1700s.
