Excerpt from Minutes of the First Session of the Union Baptist Association: Held With the Church at Kenansville, Duplin County, October 4th-7th, 1844 And 4th. Those pursuing their studies at this place are not as liable to have their morals corrupted as at some other Colleges, because it is loca ted at a distance of more than twelve miles from any village or town. Vile feel assured that the College has been rising in public estimation during the last several years. It stands greatly in need of aid at present. The Trustees have resolved to relieve it soon from debt if possible. Oth er sects are making sacrifices to place their Institutions on a permanent footing, and if we fail to pursue the same course they will, after a while, get in possession of the ground now occupied by us. The College has never been free from debt. If it was entirely free from embarrassment it would, no doubt, sustain itself. Brethren, shall it be said that the thirty five thousand baptists in this State, will suffer the College to sink? Would it not be a reproach to our denomination'l Will not all within our bounds unite with its friends generally, in relieving this institution, and in plac ing it at once on a a sure and permanent basis!
