Book Description
My familiarity with Professor Yusef Waghid’s scholarship and our collaboration span more than two decades. Therefore, a few words cannot appropriately encompass my account of the magnitude of his academic profile coupled with his personal qualities and engagement. He is a global thinker who has made significant contributions to scholarship in South Africa, the broader African world in the continent and the Diaspora, and the international community. Professor Waghid is an exceptionally prolific writer with consistent academic excellence on topics of critical importance to education and other social institutions, and the struggle for justice and social transformation. He has developed critical insights articulating the importance and necessity of epistemic equality with particular reference to indigenous knowledge system, especially uBuntu. He is a creative scholar with significant and original contributions to knowledge and transformative curriculum and pedagogy. As a public intellectual, he emulates a dialectical relationship between theory and social realities with a consistent engagement for equality and quality educational opportunity, and social progress. He is one of the foremost intellectuals hailing from South Africa with a global stature. In addition to his prominence as a scholar, Professor Waghid has personal and enviable qualities as reflected in his collegiality, trustworthiness, responsiveness, reliability, and unfailing compassion. Professor N’Dri Assie-Lumumba, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, President of Comparative and International Education Society

Chronicles on African Philosophy of Higher Education
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004543805
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 255
Book Description
The central argument in this book revolves around the significance of an African philosophy of higher education. Such a philosophy is geared towards cultivating democratic iterations, co-belonging, and critique within human encounters. Together, these actions can enhance intellectual activism within and beyond the encounters. A philosophy of higher education is constituted by a philosophical act of reflexivity according to which (how), freedom (both autonomous and communal), cosmopolitanism (learning to live with differences and otherness), and caring with others (ubuntu) can be rhythmically practised. What makes an African philosophy of higher education distinctive and realisable is that practices ought to be based on iterations, co-belonging, and critique. If intellectual activism were not to become a major act of resistance on the basis of which educational, political, and societal dystopias can be undermined, such a philosophy of higher education would not have a real purpose. An African philosophy of higher education is an intellectually activist endeavour because of its concern to be oppositional to constraints in and about higher education. In conversation with such an understanding of this philosophy, contributors to this volume offer responses to why human freedom, cosmopolitanism, and caring with others (ubuntu) can be rhythmically enacted.

High on Arrival
Author: Mackenzie Phillips
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 073181536X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 390
Book Description
Not long before her fiftieth birthday,Mackenzie Phillips walked into Los Angeles International Airport. She was on her way to a reunion for One Day at a Time, the hugely popular 70s sitcom on which she once starred as the lovable rebel Julie Cooper. Within minutes of entering the security checkpoint, Mackenzie was in handcuffs, arrested for possession of cocaine and heroin. Born into rock and roll royalty, flying in Learjets to the Virgin Islands at five, making pot brownies with her father's friends at eleven, Mackenzie grew up in an all-access kingdom of hippie freedom and heroin cool. It was a kingdom over which her father, the legendary John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, presided, often in absentia, as a spellbinding, visionary phantom. When Mackenzie was a teenager, Hollywood and the world took notice of the charming, talented, precocious child actor after her star-making turn in American Graffiti. As a young woman she joinedthe nonstop party in the hedonistic pleasure dome her father created for himself and his fellow revelers, and a rapt TV audience watched as Julie Cooper wasted away before their eyes. By the time Mackenzie discovered how deep and dark her father's trip was going, it was too late. And as an adult, she has paid dearly for a lifetime of excess, working tirelessly to reconcile a wonderful, terrible past in which she succumbed to the power of addiction and the pull of her magnetic father. As her astounding, outrageous, and often tender life story unfolds, the actor-musician-mother shares her lifelong battle with personal demons and near-fatal addictions. She overcomes seemingly impossible obstacles again and again and journeys toward redemption and peace. By exposing the shadows and secrets of the past to the light of day, the star who turned up High on Arrivalhas finally come back down to earth -- to stay.
