Book Description
To realize fusion plant, the very first step is to understand the fundamental physics of materials under fusion conditions, i.e. to understand fusion plasmas. Our research group, Plasma Diagnostics Group, focuses on developing advanced tools for physicists to extract as much information as possible from fusion plasmas at millions degrees. The Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) diagnostics is a very useful tool invented in this group to study fusion plasma electron temperature and it fluctuations. This dissertation presents millimeter wave imaging technology advances recently developed in this group to improve the ECEI system. New technologies made it more powerful to image and visualize magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) activities and micro-turbulence in fusion plasmas.Topics of particular emphasis start from development of miniaturized elliptical substrate lens array. This novel substrate lens array replaces the previous generation substrate lens, hyper-hemispherical substrate lens, in terms of geometry. From the optical performance perspective, this substitution not only significantly simplifies the optical system with improved optical coupling, but also enhances the RF/LO coupling efficiency. By the benefit of the mini lens focusing properties, a wideband dual-dipole antenna array is carefully designed and developed. The new antenna array is optimized simultaneously for receiving both RF and LO, with sharp radiation patterns, low side-lobe levels, and less crosstalk between adjacent antennas. In addition, a high frequency antenna is also developed, which extends the frequency limit from 145 GHz to 220 GHz. This type of antenna will be used on high field operation tokamaks with toroidal fields in excess of 3 Tesla.Another important technology advance is so-called extended bandwidth double down-conversion electronics. This new electronics extends the instantaneous IF coverage from 2 to 9.2 GHz to 2 to 16.4 GHz. From the plasma point of view, it means that the instantaneous spatial coverage is doubled without compromising the spatial resolution. Other related technology advances, including frequency selective surfaces, beam splitters, ultra wideband baluns, pre-amplification scheme, are addressed in less detail. Finally, the Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) radiometer system on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) is discussed.

Book Description
Millimeter-wave imaging diagnostic instruments developed by Davis Millimeter Research Center (DMRC) have made important contributions to fusion science and have been adopted at major fusion facilities worldwide: Electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging is a passive radiometric technique that measures electron temperature fluctuations; and microwave imaging reflectometry (MIR) is an active radar imaging technique that measures electron density fluctuations. These instruments have been comprised with the combination of discrete waveguide components and board-level surface mount components employing quasi-optical coupling in the front-end system. Aim to implement ultra-wideband observation for visualizing the 2-D images of fusion plasma in the old days, the conventional passive down-converting mixer mounted on the printed board antenna with mini lens offers the most reliable method therefore becomes the first generation of above techniques. Such technology has been widely applied and has provided crucial contributions on sawtooth, Alfven eigenmodes, and ELMs. Until recent, existing systems have been installed in several major magnetic confinement devices around the world, such as DIII-D, KSTAR, ASDEX-U, EAST, HL-2A, TEXTOR and J-TEXT. Nowadays, advances in device fabrication and the scaling of feature size have recently extended the maximum operating frequency of integrated circuits considerably in excess of a hundred gigahertz. The groundbreaking improvement on the electronic device, a multi-function instrumentation can be implemented by integrating the entire front-end system on a single chip, which is known as system-on-chip (SoC) technique. In this dissertation, the author will introduce the system from the previous hardware limitations to the system-on-chip advancement for fusion science applications and will deliver the details of the waveguide horn antenna array with single MMIC receiver module. Fusion plasma diagnostics require operation at specific frequencies with >20 GHz bandwidth limiting the usefulness of commercial products. The in-house designed receiver chip offer >30 dB signal amplification over 20 GHz bandwidth with

Book Description
Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) has been proven be to an effective technique of plasma diagnostics to investigate the electron temperature and its fluctuations in tokamaks. Wider bandwidth of the ECEI system has always been of great interest to the researchers since it enables wider radial coverage and therefore provides more information concerning the spatial profile of the high temperature plasma. Here, in this thesis, a frequency extender system is designed to extend the current ECEI system's RF bandwidth, from 2-9.2 GHz with 8 channels to 2-18 GHz with 16 channels. The detailed design process and the final layout of the frequency extender are provided, together with measurement results compared with simulation results. The feasibility of the idea of frequency extender is verified.
