Book Description
The Army considers modular force transformation its most extensive restructuring since World War II. The Army has estimated that restructuring units from a division-based force to a more agile and responsive modular brigade-based force will require a significant investment through fiscal year 2011. To facilitate this transformation, Public Law No. 109-163 Section 353 directs the Army to develop and implement a training strategy for the modular brigades. This law also directs GAO to report on the implementation of the strategy. This report discusses (1) the extent to which the Army's training strategy addresses the five elements specified in the public law and (2) the actions the Army has taken to implement its training strategy and the implementation challenges it faces. To address these objectives, GAO reviewed Army training strategy documentation and interviewed Army training personnel.

To facilitate this transformation, Public Law No. 109-163, Section 353, directs the Army to develop and implement a training strategy for the modular brigades. To address these objectives, GAO reviewed Army training strategy documentation and interviewed Army training personnel. GAO recommends that the Army do the following: (1) take a series of actions to improve its ability to assess unit training and identify funding needs for training by clarifying specific goals, metrics, and its funding model; and (2) revise the training strategy, clarify capacity, and complete testing of the exportable training capability. In commenting on a draft of this report, the Department of Defense generally concurred with four recommendations and did not concur with two.

Book Description
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) is an independent agency that works for Congress. The GAO watches over Congress, and investigates how the federal government spends taxpayers dollars. The Comptroller General of the United States is the leader of the GAO, and is appointed to a 15-year term by the U.S. President. The GAO wants to support Congress, while at the same time doing right by the citizens of the United States. They audit, investigate, perform analyses, issue legal decisions and report anything that the government is doing. This is one of their reports.

The Army¿s and Marine Corps¿ major training facilities have focused on training units for counter-insurgency missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. As troop levels decrease in Iraq and increase in Afghanistan, larger numbers of forces will be training for Afghanistan. To meet future requirements, the services plan to adjust training to train forces on a fuller range of missions. This report assessed the extent to which the Army and Marine Corps have: (1) made adjustments at their major training facilities to support larger deployments to Afghanistan; and (2) developed plans to adjust training capacity to meet future requirements. The report analyzed service training guidance and requirements, and interviewed officials from the services¿ training facilities. Illus.

Book Description
In conventional warfare, support forces (SF) such as military police, engineers, and medical personnel normally operate behind the front lines of a battlefield. But in Iraq and Afghanistan -- both in U.S. Central Command's (CENTCOM) area of responsibility -- there is no clear distinction between front lines and rear areas, and SF are sometimes exposed to hostile fire without help from combat arms units. This report on combat skills training for SF assessed the extent to which: (1) Army and Marine Corps SF are completing required combat skills training; (2) the services and CENTCOM have information to validate completion of required training; and (3) the services have used lessons learned to adjust combat skills training for SF.
