This book presents the results of a research on the integration of second generation migrants in Catalonia. Drawing on in-depth biographical interviews, we demonstrate the link between language and social mobility. Language is a particularly important social issue in Catalonia. A bilingual region in northeast Spain, Catalonia has been receiving foreign migration for several decades. Nowadays, some of the children of those migrants are entering the labor market. For many migrant families, providing social mobility for their children was one of their main goals. What effects does bilingualism have on the social trajectories of migrant children? Is Catalan important for social mobility? The book answers these questions focusing on the fate of three migrant communities: Argentineans, Colombians and Moroccans. This book contains a major statement by one of America's most preeminent sociologists on what remains an important problem in American history and social analysis: the nature and extent of movement within American society from one status to another. The most important images of mobility involve self-improvement by changing location (going to the frontier, coming to the big city), and by changing social class (second-generation immigrants). Almost all sociological and historical analysis has been limited to these themes. Strauss extends the concept to a wide range of ideologies, institutional contexts, and social movements; his analysis is based on a formal theory of status passage and develops a partial theory of mobility. Strauss addresses a theme that underscores much of one strand of his work: the changing articulation of individuals with their social structure and institutions. The book follows on from the theoretical presuppositions of Discovery of Grounded Theory and the formal theory presented in Status Passage. The primacy of education in development agendas is unquestioned. With the gradual acknowledgement of the potential benefits that migration can hold for development, the relationship between migration and education is a growing area of research. Migration, Education and Socio-Economic Mobility explores how the decisions people make in terms of both their migration choices and educational investments, mediated as they are by gender, class, caste and nationality, can potentially contribute to earning incomes, building social and symbolic capital, or reshaping gender relations, all elements contributing to the process of economic and social mobility. Much of the existing literature examining the links between migration and education focuses either on the investment of migrant remittances in the education of their children back home or on ‘brain drain’ that refers to the migration of skilled workers from the developing to the developed world. Most of these discussions are firmly rooted in materialist arguments and while undeniably important, tend to underplay the social processes through which migration and education interact to shape people’s lives, identities and status in society. Along with economic security, people also aspire to social mobility and status enhancement. The ideas presented in this book take a more varied and nuanced view of the relationship between education and migration. The migration of Europeans to the New World at the end of the nineteenth century has been documented by numerous historians. Few, however, have addressed the second migration which occurred between the countries of the Western Hemisphere, especially that which took place between Brazil and Argentina. This thesis uses primary and secondary sources, including diplomatic reports, government records and newspaper articles, to define the magnitude of the migration and shows that, between 1880 and 1914, a substantially larger number of people left Brazil for Argentina than left Argentina for Brazil. This thesis also offers a number of explanations for the phenomenon described above, including a difference in economic opportunities and possibilities for social mobility between the two countries. After providing background information on the immigration of Europeans to the Southern Cone during the period in question, this thesis examines key events including emancipation, political changes, labor organization and war and explains their impact on migration within the region. The differing colonial foundations of the two countries is also presented as playing a critical role in the development of elite attitudes toward free labor. In conclusion, a variety of factors allowed for increased social mobility, or at least the perception of social mobility, in Argentina, which is reflected in the magnitude of new immigrants who moved from Brazil across the Rio de la Plata in search of a better life.
