Excerpt from Middlesex Parish Registers, Vol. 4: Marriages The reader will, of course, remember that these printed abstracts of Marriages are not evidence in the technicalsense. Certified extracts must still be obtained when evidence of a marriage is required for proving a pedigree in a court of law, or when registering it at Heralds' College. For such certificates application must be made to the clergy in charge of the original Registers. The practice is now becoming more general of printing Registers as far as 1837, when the registrar-general's office was established. By the Act passed 28th July, 1812, it became obligatory to record baptisms and burials in printed Registers, and, as a rule, the opportunity was taken of commencing new Register books for marriages, although their form is similar to those which had been in force since 1754, under Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act, excepting that each form is numbered. In a serial work of this kind the advantage of stopping at 1812 is obvious, allowing as it does a larger number of parishes to be dealt within each volume, but as, since this series was started, 1812 has receded still more into the past, it has been decided that in future volumes the Registers shall be brought down, whenever possible, to the year 1837, when the present uniform system of registration was instituted. It only remains to say that the Editors will be glad to hear from any of the clergy and others who are interested in the work. Further help in transcription would be appreciated. Owing to a printer's error some of the footings in this volume bear the indicating number III instead of IV but it is of no consequence.
