Book Description
Excerpt from A Calendar of the Middle Temple Records The Records in question, with the exception of the first volume, which is evidently a fair copy of pre existing materials, appear to have been made from time to time contemporaneously with the deliberations in the form of Minutes hurriedly written in different hands, with interpolations occasionally afterwards, largely in Latin with passages in English confined chiefly to the Resolutions or Orders come to, and unfortunately rarely commemorating matters of contemporary history, domestic or public, such as would now deeply interest us. In further illustration of these Minutes, the following paper by Master James Anderson, a most active Treasurer in 1860, may here be appropriately inserted. It is a careful description of the books, and contains other interesting matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Minutes of Parliament of the Middle Temple Records, 1501-1603, Vol. 1: With an Inquiry Into the Origin and Early History of the Inn An attempt has also been made to use the English entries for the selection of words and phrases for the translation of entries of a similar import in Latin, as, for instance, libitum is translated liking; pro co, in its stead museum, study; and there are many other similar words. It is for this reason that dolium is translated bogs head, though its usual meaning is tun. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Calendar of the Inner Temple Records, Vol. 1: 21 Hen. VII. (1505)-45 Eliz. (1603) N considering this first volume of the Records of the Inner Temple, it will be remarked that the entries are short and bare, and that they are confined, with few exceptions, to the orders passed at the Parliaments held at regular intervals within the Inn. It is probable that during the early years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Calendar of the Inner Temple Records, Vol. 3: 12 Charles II. (1660)-12 Anne (1714) In 167 I the king and the duke again honoured the treasurer with their presence on Candlemass day, on which occasion the hall was again arranged for their reception, and a performance of The Com mittee, a comedy by Sir R. Howard, was given for their entertainment by the players of the king's house. The reader's feast of 1661 was the last of the great entertainments chronicled by Dugdale or by any later historian. Other festivities were honoured by the presence of kings, queens, and great officers of state, but they were of a more modern type and were wanting in those picturesque details which delight the artist and the antiquary. Book Description
Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Description
The history of the Middle Temple is a long and fascinating one. Templars held the estate of the Temple from the twelfth century until their suppression in the early fourteenth century; thereafter the lawyers came. The magnificent Tudor Hall of the Middle Temple was completed in 1574. By Elizabethan times the Inns of Court were known colloquially as the Third University of England. Many persons other than lawyers became members of Middle Temple - among them Sir Walter Raleigh, Elias Ashmole, Edward Hyde (Earl of Clarendon), William Congreve, Henry Fielding, Edmund Burke, William Cowper and William Makepeace Thackeray. Another Middle Templar and explorer was Bartholomew Gosnold, discoverer of Cape Cod, who named a nearby island Martha's Vineyard in honour of his six-year-old daughter. From those beginnings grew the thirteen American colonies, and in due course five Middle Templars signed the American Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776. Moreover, the US Constitution was drafted by a committee chaired by yet another Middle Templar, John Rutledge, who, along with six other Middle Templars, was among its 39 original signatories. The story of the Inn in modern times has seen it become one of the world's pre-eminent centres for legal education and practice. This history of the Middle Temple, written by a team of eminent lawyers and legal historians, is the product of original research in the archives of the Middle Temple and will be a treasure trove of information about the Inn, its diverse history and influence.
