Book Description
Annotation Provides basic information about microbiology for analytical chemists in industry who have no background in it but are occasionally required, for example, to test for bacteria in food or water. Establishing whether a sample is contaminated, counting and identifying micro-organisms, determining their effect on the sample, and procedures for disinfecting and preservative testing are among the topics. Describes both traditional laboratory methods and the new rapid techniques. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Book Description
Analytical chemists in industry are frequently faced with situations where a basic understanding of microbiology would be an advantage, for instance in the analysis of bacteria in food. Microbiology for the Analytical Chemist has been written specifically for analytical chemists who have little or no knowledge of microbiology, but might be required to interpret microbiological results. This book covers a wide range of microbiological situations in analysis. It deals with the question of establishing when a sample is contaminated, the problems of counting and identifying micro-organisms and establishing what effect they will have on the sample. The book examines the microbial contents of water and food. It also looks at the procedures for disinfecting and preservative testing. Traditional laboratory methods are discussed, and new rapid techniques are also considered. Microbiology for the Analytical Chemist is unusual in that it pulls together those aspects of microbiology which are of interest to analytical chemists and explains them at a basic level using practical situations as examples. This book will also be of interest to analytical chemists in academic or industrial laboratories, where there is no fund of microbiological experience to draw on.

Book Description
The First International Symposium on the Interface between Analytical Chemistry and Microbiology: Applications of Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry was held June 1987 at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, U.S.A. The purpose of the "Interface" meeting was to forge connections between analytical chemists and microbiologists that are using chromatography and mass spectrometry to solve common problems. The goals were admirably fulfilled. Nearly a hundred participants from seven European countries, Japan, and the United States participated in hearing twenty-three plenary talks and thirty-six submitted papers and posters. The papers and discussions displayed the breadth and depth of current research applications and revealed future directions. This book "Analytical Microbiology Methods: Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry" is loosely based on some of the presentations and discussions at the meeting. Each chapter describes specific methodology and applications in the context of the relevant scientific background. The present book continues the theme of an earlier book, "Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Applications in Microbiology", edited by G. Odham, L. Larsson, and P-A. Mardh, published by Plenum Press in 1984.

Book Description
Food Contaminants and Residue Analysis treats different aspects of the analysis of contaminants and residues in food and highlights some current concerns facing this field. The content is initiated by an overview on food safety, the objectives and importance of determining contaminants and residues in food, and the problems and challenges associated to these analyses. This is followed by full details of relevant EU and USA regulations. Topics, such as conventional chromatographic methods, accommodating cleanup, and preparing substances for further instrumental analysis, are encompassed with new analytical techniques that have been developed, significantly, over the past few years, like solid phase microextraction, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, immunoassays, and biosensors. A wide range of toxic contaminants and residues, from pesticides to mycotoxins or dioxins are examined, including polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, N-nitrosamines, heterocyclic amines, acrylamide, semicarbazide, phthalates and food packing migrating substances. This book can be a practical resource that offers ideas on how to choose the most effective techniques for determining these compounds as well as on how to solve problems or to provide relevant information. Logically structured and with numerous examples, Food Contaminants and Residue Analysis will be valuable a reference and training guide for postgraduate students, as well as a practical tool for a wide range of experts: biologists, biochemists, microbiologists, food chemists, toxicologists, chemists, agronomists, hygienists, and everybody who needs to use the analytical techniques for evaluating food safety.

Book Description
A multidisciplinary approach to understanding the fundamentals of mass spectrometry for bacterial analysis From chemotaxonomy to characterization of targeted proteins, Identification of Microorganisms by Mass Spectrometry provides an overview of both well-established and cutting-edge mass spectrometry techniques for identifying microorganisms. A vital tool for microbiologists, health professionals, and analytical chemists, the text is designed to help scientists select the most effective techniques for use in biomedical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, and bioterror defense applications. Since microbiological applications of mass spectrometry require a basic understanding of both microbiology and analytical chemistry, the editors have incorporated material from both disciplines so that readers from either field will come to understand the necessary principles of the other. Featuring contributions from some of the most recognized experts in both fields, this volume provides specific examples of fundamental methods as well as approaches developed in the last decade, including: * Metastable atom bombardment pyrolysis mass spectrometry * Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI) * MALDI time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) of intact bacteria * High-resolution Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS) * Electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry Identification of Microorganisms by Mass Spectrometry represents the most comprehensive and up-to-date work on the topic currently available. It is liberally illustrated with figures and tables and covers every aspect of spectrometric identification of microorganisms, including experimental procedures, various means of sample preparation, data analysis, and interpretation of complex mass spectral data.
