Book Description
Excerpt from The Miami Student: October 1903 When I was a student at Miami University, there was a tradition current among the people of Oxford and the institutions of learning located there, that if a student kissed a Western girl across the dead line, he and the girl would sooner or later become man and wife. The matter was so exceedingly simple and result so very great, that everyone was interested in seeing it verified. While this superstitious idea was handed down chiefly by word of mouth, yet there were in Oxford numerous females of uncertain age who had been perennial belles as the classes had come and gone, who had kept written records for many years to prove the infallibility of this tradition, and who could prove to any person of ordinary intelligence, that the result followed the act as certainly as any physical fact in the due course of nature. I have seen these records myself and can certify to their extraordinary accuracy, and that they demonstrated beyond question, that the only cases that admitted of any serious doubt were those where the original kissing had not been established by thoroughly reliable evidence.
