Traumatic Defeat
Author: Patrick Gallagher
Publisher: University Press of Kansas
ISBN: 0700626441
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
War breeds myths, especially those made up by the vanquished to explain or soften their loss. Occasionally the myths of the defeated center on prisoners of war (POWs) and those missing in action (MIAs) to justify the lost struggle, mute national guilt, and sometimes even reject the reality of defeat itself. Traumatic Defeat takes a close, comparative look at two cases of this kind of mythmaking—in West Germany in the wake of World War II and in the United States after the Vietnam War. The book examines a specific case of mythmaking that revolves around the ambiguity of missing men and the trauma resulting from their unresolved fates. The “secret camp myth,” so called for the covert facilities where the missing supposedly survive, shared certain features in postwar Germany and America. Both nations suffered extreme trauma and struggled to find redemptive elements in their wartime experiences; both focused on POWs and MIAs to minimize their guilt and recast themselves as victims of wars they had started. Author Patrick Gallagher examines the similarities between West Germany’s myth aimed at men lost in the Soviet Union and America’s myth directed at those missing in Southeast Asia. The differences, however, are instructive, particularly the longevity of the American myth involving a few thousand soldiers compared with the relative short life of the more plausible German version involving millions. In search of the nature and meaning of these myths, Gallagher takes us into the wars themselves, the circumstances in which soldiers went missing, and the manner in which each nation framed its losses according to its own political, ideological, and historical needs. Traumatic Defeat, the first in-depth comparative study of this phenomenon, reveals how myths conjured in the trauma of military defeat can distort and dominate national conversations on the history of warfare, aftermath, and loss.

Four Decades On
Author: Scott Laderman
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 0822378825
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 345
Book Description
In Four Decades On, historians, anthropologists, and literary critics examine the legacies of the Second Indochina War, or what most Americans call the Vietnam War, nearly forty years after the United States finally left Vietnam. They address matters such as the daunting tasks facing the Vietnamese at the war's end—including rebuilding a nation and consolidating a socialist revolution while fending off China and the Khmer Rouge—and "the Vietnam syndrome," the cynical, frustrated, and pessimistic sense that colored America's views of the rest of the world after its humiliating defeat in Vietnam. The contributors provide unexpected perspectives on Agent Orange, the POW/MIA controversies, the commercial trade relationship between the United States and Vietnam, and representations of the war and its aftermath produced by artists, particularly writers. They show how the war has continued to affect not only international relations but also the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. Most of the contributors take up matters in the United States, Vietnam, or both nations, while several utilize transnational analytic frameworks, recognizing that the war's legacies shape and are shaped by dynamics that transcend the two countries. Contributors. Alex Bloom, Diane Niblack Fox, H. Bruce Franklin, Walter Hixson, Heonik Kwon, Scott Laderman, Mariam B. Lam, Ngo Vinh Long, Edwin A. Martini, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Christina Schwenkel, Charles Waugh

JACK BEAN was an adventurous kid with quick wit and a seemingly fearless attitude. In the small town of Ellerehc, the Great Museum is all the rave, but what happens on that fateful night inevitably changes the course of Jack's life forever. Years later, the choices he and his wife Mercy made while attending The University of Doomsburg, end up having an adverse effect on their future, and the future of their seven children: thirteen-year-old Mia, eleven-year-old Mitchell, eight-and-a-half-year-old Matthew, seven-year-old Halley, six-year-old identical twins David and Andrew, and four-year-old little Mary. The Beans weren't very wealthy but found richness in having a loving family. When Mercy's wicked sister Pigadamus and her family come to stay with the Beans, the esteem of the entire family is hit hard. With the Beans eldest daughter being much like her soft-hearted mother, the kids finally reached their breaking point. While being equipped with special and amazing powers, Mia and the rest of the Bean clan feel the need to turn away from their parents teachings to be passive citizens in the town where Betty Evilly and her family rule. When Mia's arch-nemesis Betty discovers a secret buried deep within the Nimba Mountains of Liberia, more havoc and adventure quickly ensues. The kids overwhelming desire to use their extraordinary powers against their enemies lead them into a world of fantasy, intrigue, and danger; a world known as Dreamecca where the impossible becomes possible. With the evil King Logicome in their way, the kids only hope of survival is to combine their strengths and get a little help from their newfound friends in this magical land.
