Book Description
Conceptual progress in fundamental theoretical physics is linked with the search for the suitable mathematical structures that model the physical systems. Quantum field theory (QFT) has proven to be a rich source of ideas for mathematics for a long time. However, fundamental questions such as ``What is a QFT?'' did not have satisfactory mathematical answers, especially on spaces with arbitrary topology, fundamental for the formulation of perturbative string theory. This book contains a collection of papers highlighting the mathematical foundations of QFT and its relevance to perturbative string theory as well as the deep techniques that have been emerging in the last few years. The papers are organized under three main chapters: Foundations for Quantum Field Theory, Quantization of Field Theories, and Two-Dimensional Quantum Field Theories. An introduction, written by the editors, provides an overview of the main underlying themes that bind together the papers in the volume.

Book Description
Subriemannian geometries can be viewed as limits of Riemannian geometries. They arise naturally in many areas of pure (algebra, geometry, analysis) and applied (mechanics, control theory, mathematical physics) mathematics, as well as in applications (e.g., robotics). This book is devoted to the study of subriemannian geometries, their geodesics, and their applications. It starts with the simplest nontrivial example of a subriemannian geometry: the two-dimensional isoperimetric problem reformulated as a problem of finding subriemannian geodesics. Among topics discussed in other chapters of the first part of the book are an elementary exposition of Gromov's idea to use subriemannian geometry for proving a theorem in discrete group theory and Cartan's method of equivalence applied to the problem of understanding invariants of distributions. The second part of the book is devoted to applications of subriemannian geometry. In particular, the author describes in detail Berry's phase in quantum mechanics, the problem of a falling cat righting herself, that of a microorganism swimming, and a phase problem arising in the $N$-body problem. He shows that all these problems can be studied using the same underlying type of subriemannian geometry. The reader is assumed to have an introductory knowledge of differential geometry. This book that also has a chapter devoted to open problems can serve as a good introduction to this new, exciting area of mathematics.

Book Description
By a quantum metric space we mean a $C DEGREES*$-algebra (or more generally an order-unit space) equipped with a generalization of the usual Lipschitz seminorm on functions which one associates to an ordinary metric. We develop for compact quantum metric spaces a version of Gromov-Hausdorff di

Book Description
This comprehensive book is an introduction to the basics of Finsler geometry with recent developments in its area. It includes local geometry as well as global geometry of Finsler manifolds. In Part I, the authors discuss differential manifolds, Finsler metrics, the Chern connection, Riemannian and non-Riemannian quantities. Part II is written for readers who would like to further their studies in Finsler geometry. It covers projective transformations, comparison theorems, fundamental group, minimal immersions, harmonic maps, Einstein metrics, conformal transformations, amongst other related topics. The authors made great efforts to ensure that the contents are accessible to senior undergraduate students, graduate students, mathematicians and scientists.

Book Description
This volume is an original collection of articles by 44 leading mathematicians on the theme of the future of the discipline. The contributions range from musings on the future of specific fields, to analyses of the history of the discipline, to discussions of open problems and conjectures, including first solutions of unresolved problems. Interestingly, the topics do not cover all of mathematics, but only those deemed most worthy to reflect on for future generations. These topics encompass the most active parts of pure and applied mathematics, including algebraic geometry, probability, logic, optimization, finance, topology, partial differential equations, category theory, number theory, differential geometry, dynamical systems, artificial intelligence, theory of groups, mathematical physics and statistics.

Book Description
This book deals with fractal geometries that have features similar to ones of ordinary Euclidean spaces, while at the same time being quite different from Euclidean spaces.. A basic example of this feature considered is the presence of Sobolev or Poincaré inequalities, concerning the relationship between the average behavior of a function and the average behavior of its small-scale oscillations. Remarkable results in the last few years through Bourdon-Pajot and Laakso have shown that there is much more in the way of geometries like this than have been realized, only examples related to nilpotent Lie groups and Carnot metrics were known previously. On the other had, 'typical' fractals that might be seen in pictures do not have these same kinds of features. This text examines these topics in detail and will interest graduate students as well as researchers in mathematics and various aspects of geometry and analysis.

Book Description
Relationalism seeks to ground all claims about the structure of space in facts about actual and possible configurations of matter. Gordon Belot elucidates the prospects for this view of the nature of space by investigating the kew notion of geometric possibility in relation to philosophical notions of physical possibility.
